I just called register.com so that I could transfer a domain that I registered some time ago. First off, I was told that both me and the party I am transferring the domain to must fill out a Transfer of Registrant form and fax it to them. This to say the least, was frustrating. But here is the kicker, this appears on the form:

IV. New Registrant Billing Information

Please provide the credit card information that is to be associated with the new registrant's Register.com account. Please enter all of the information below exactly as it appears on file with the credit card vendor."

The credit card specified here will be charged $200, per domain name, to complete the transfer. If you wish to change this billing information after completing the transfer, you may do so through Domain Manager (http://mydomain.register.com).

WHAT THE!!!!

Are you kidding me? Am I missing something?

Here is the link to the form.

I recall reading about this before. 200.00 is a lot of money to transfer away

You're reading it right. Your best bet would be to transfer the domain to another registrar asap.

... before the price goes up even further.

Pull!

"Pull" (initiate a transfer at the receiving end Registrar, as advised above) these domains to your Enom Reseller accounts, for instance, as soon as you can, IMHO. I have done this many, many times over the years! :talk: :imho:

Cost per domain name transfer via this method: $8.95 for one-year renewal!

It's another reason to always read the fine print.
If a registrar charges for transfers don't use them !
The supposed aim of domain transfer was to foster competition in the first place and not make customers hostage.

:bingo:

Initiate a transfer at (to be received by) GoDaddy (keeping same ownership for now), then approve the "authorization" via email (as the owner per Whois Admin. contact) and give it 48 - 72 hours and it should be in your account at GoDaddy (for the easy price of an yearly renewal), IMHO.
I must say, I've only ever done with with Enom ... but should work similarly! :music:

Please keep us posted.

Register.com sucks. They are run by Mark Cuban and he sucks.

Transfer the name to yourself at another registrar but then you will have to wait 60 to transfer away again.

Mark Cuban, the owner of Dallas Mavericks? No wonder this guy is so rich!

And people complain about Godaddy:-/

As listed above if you follow that you should only pay $9 maximum, not the $200.

I used to have a number of names are Register.com. It's simple enough to transfer to another registrar. Make sure that the registrar you are transferring to doesn't have any limits on transferring once it arrives.

As a point of interest, it is often possible to open an account with the new registrar in the name of the new owner and request a registrar transfer from that account. The account then goes from the old registrar to the new owner at the new registrar in one step.

Register.com is one of the worst registers out there, cost, security, you name it.

I would personally avoid them.

Godaddy isn't much better, I would stay WELL away from them too.

I have never had a problem with Godaddy so I don't know what that is all about.

Enom and Namecheap are also good choices.

That's like saying Mark Cuban "runs" Tucows.
Cuban doesn't run either, he is just a shareholder in both.

13% in register.com and 9% in Tucows.

fabulous.com
Best registrar for price, service & security in my opinion. But not for people starting out, in the industry, not sure what their requirements for bulk accounts are these days.

Namecheap.com (not enom)
Good price & excellent user interface, combined with service better than most other registrars. Excellent for beginner to high intermediate users.

These 2 are the only ones I can say I really trust at the moment, add in the service and security & reliability and chances are you won't be disappointed with either.
