Months after cancelling my account with 1and1 after years of dissatisfaction and false billing for transferred DNs, I have received a "warning" letter from them advising them to login and update my account details so that I can pay a $1700 bill! Previous to this I have had to ask my CC company for two chargebacks for false invoices. The best part is that they wont accept my login to their contracts site - cos I cancelled the account.

I had about 4 domains left with them that Fabulous would not accept because they were .co.uks! I just let them drop and shut the account down and now this!

Is this the credit crunch, a phishing scam from 1and1 or are they really this crap?

Dear XXXXXX XXX,
We recently attempted to debit your credit card / account with the outstanding balance for your 1&1 package. Maybe you don't have to do anything.

The email says the charges were denied.

Maybe contact your credit card company and report them for false billing; cc companies take this stuff very seriously.

You forgot to add a poll option: "somewhat bad and useless".

Rereading my post, I dont think I was feeling as subtle as to include that in my options.

To Ms Domainer - I dont expect to have to do anything; the sheer cheek and/or incompetence surprised me. It is possible that this is some sort of phishing scam from 1 and 1 and in that case a non-response would be the most appropriate anyway.

you may also include your review of it
http://www.namepros.com/registerindex.php?detail=40

haven't use it so I can't vote yet, but I have no intention of using it since as you see the review on it, mostly out of 4 stars, they got a half-star.

i already got a clue.

They tried to get me for $1200 too in an overusage for one month on a $10 a month hosting account. I told them to F off and ignored them. imho...just ignore them and make sure they can't bill you. Report your CC as lost or stolen if you must.

Boy, this sounds like a rogue registrar -- makes me wonder why ICANN doesn't shut these crooks down or at least investigate them.

The next thing you should expect from them is a third party collections letter. I got two and sent them back saying it was not a valid debt. Haven't heard any more, but I still get notices my domains (which are not at 1&1) are not pointed at their servers.

Any other merchant closes the account if they don't get paid. These guys seem to leave it open and try to scam more money from you.

They suck but they are the 6th largest registrar and have more gTLD domains then Moniker and Fabulous combined. Most of there customers aren't domainers but people with maybe one site or two who use them for hosting and therefore register domains with them too. Feel sorry for all these people.

I got this a few days ago from an old hosting account I thought I had allowed to expire. Apparently not. After much fighting and opening up a BBB complaint, they refuse to close the collections. (approx: $70) They did offer to refund back a certain portion (about half)

But, Im wondering if there collections is a true collections, or just a BS way to try and bilk some cash out of me. I certainly dont want this on my Credit Report over $70.,..

I get the feeling they don't allow accounts to "just expire".

However, it's only been about three months since I returned the collections letters and I have not pulled a credit report since then, so I don't know where things stand. I doubt it's the last of it since I keep getting those messages about the DNS setting on my domains (the ones that aren't there :).

My review for 1and1.com

C:/> They donot have domain push service. They delete the domain from registry and re-register the same domain from another accounts. I lost my 3 great domain with two quad premium LLLL.com since somebody backorder them.
C:/> Their customer support is worse. I once talked to them on phone. A teenager boy pickups the phone asking me how to change nameserver?
C:/> Their website is the worse among all. I found a lot of possible passwords leakage.
C:/> They cancelled my account once because their payment system was down for 13 days and my payment cannot be processed. How can I pay when their payment service is not working??

I have been frustrated by 1and1.com so I transferred all my domains to GD, dynadot and name.com

I would say NEVER TRUST THEM!

There appears to be no limit as to how bad 1 and 1 get! This thread should be a sticky somewhere on this site.

An unbiased opinion! :p

If you google it, you'll find plenty of similar complaints about them.

They will send you collection letters from now until hell freezes over. The only way to "officially" close your account USED to involve faxing something to them in Germany, not sure if that's still the case.

Good luck.
