[Infobase] - What makes a good, detailed domain appraisal?

Hi,

I'm writing a computer domain appraisals system (URL to be released in a later date), and I want to know: What makes an accurate, detailed domain appraisal?

I am already taking into account:

- Google results of domain in quotes. Eg, "name pros"
- OVT results
- Extention
- Daily revenue
- Daily traffic
- Developed (this is controversial - I may use Google to find how many pages are on the site, so a LARGE one isn't the same as a SMALL one.)
- Expiration Date (vs. current date, and more than 1 year increases Google PR)
- registration fee
- Registrar

Then the result outputs the value to an end user, a reseller (collector), and suggested actions for the domain.

A few questions:

Do parked domains have lower value, even though they bring in revenue (other than default parking)?

Is the way I intend to cope with the misconceptions in the Development idea good?

And... what other things should be considered? Brandability? If so, how?

And all this calculated automatically by computer. Please keep that in mind.

Thanks!
-Matt

PS. Should I consider the number of members, if there can be any?

PS2. Also - please note I don't want to start appraising the ENTIRE SITE, lol... maybe I shouldn't consider # of members.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
AfternicAfternic
other factors: number of characters, TM.
I don't think registerar or fees big deal.

Appraisals are Digital Snake oil absolutely worthless IMO, I don't care what anyone said your name was worth will not affect my opinion if I am the one buying only opinion that matters is the buyer. BEcause if those others that appraised the name so high, offer them the name for 1/10 the price see if they will buy it most likely not. Only industry where someone will not pay 1/10 what they appraised it I certainly would buy a stock 1/10 of the value it was selling for. I have had names appraised for $5000 offered to the astute appraiser for $300 No sale How can this be? Because appraisals are worthless unless you are getting paid to give them. Anywhere from 2 NP to $50 depends where youre getting appraisal. IMO

Good luck and common sense of an end user is what makes the appraisal good.

If we are talking about a site then that is buying a business and traditional ratios for buying a business come into play nothing to do with appraisals. Revenue $50000 a year someone going to pay 3x's sales for one industry maybe 10 x's for another industry but that is no appraisal that Is Business Buying 101 many books written on that process.

Check for hyphens ( - ) which lowers according to most people.
Extension should be taken into account...
Match keyword worth in a database (like overture I think)
Look for matches in dictionary to be sure it's has actual word(s)...(and is spelt correctly)

I think the whole analysing the website at the domain is a bad idea, unless you get them to tick a checkbox if they want their website thrown into the valuation or not.

Thanks all, there's been some great tips posted. I've added rep and will look into everything :)

Typos... that's a good point. I will add that to the consideration. TM issues I thought of as I went to sleep last night, I may be able to do that, hyphens yes, etc. Thanks again!
