If not backordered, when do NameJet domains become available to reg?

A domain I am interested in expired on October 4. It is available for backorder on NJ but I suspect there will be no bids. If no bids are placed will the domain become available to hand register? And if so, when should that happen in relation to the date/time listed for "Backorder By"...

Backorder Details:
Current Bid: $0
Backorder By: Nov. 8, 2008 8:00 PM
Type: Pre-Release
Your Bid: $0
Bid History: 0 bids

Great question. I would be interested to know this too...

The answer to that question depends on who's the sponsoring registrar of the
expired domain name. If the registrar eventually drops it and the domain name
switches to Redemption Period, count 35-36 days from its last updated date.

I thought the date & time listed on "Backorder By" might indicate more precisely when it would be available. If no bids are placed by that time does it become immediately available?

The registrar is Network Solutions. But how do you tell if it has dropped and/or switched to redemption period?

Whois data...

I thought that by the time a name is on backorder at NJ (or snap or pool...) it must already be in Pending Delete? Doesn't it have to be - since otherwise the old owner could still renew it (if it's still in redemption)?

Obviously I'm very confused about this.

Count me in as confused as well. I found a name on Namejet a while back that never received any bids then disappeared from their site. I watched whois for a long time as it went through redemption and on the 5th day of "pending delete" it magically, suddenly appeared at Snapnames. Silly me figured I'd bid later on that day..then totally forgot and someone else ended up with it...How can a name go from Namejet and end up at Snap 35-ish days later?

Generally speaking, anything on their pending delete list will drop at 2pm EST (GMT -5) on the day it says to backorder by. If a domain hasn't entered "pending delete" status and is on their pre-release list, it is difficult to know the exact day it will drop on because different registrars have different grace periods (45-90 days?)... but once it goes pending delete it will drop in 5 days.

At least that is my understanding, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right Mike,

Krx, The best thing to do would be to wait until the domain is past redemption period & enters "Pending Delete". At which point it will expire 5 days later & will appear on the lists of the major auctions - trying to get you to backorder the name.

If there are no backorders on the name, you can probably hand reg it on the drop date (as per the "Backorder by" date on snap's, pool's & NJ's lists). The Backorder by date is the date the domain drops.

However, if there are no backorders & the domain drops - you may not be able to hand register it just yet. Snapnames will probably pick up the domain to taste it & add it to their "Now" auction.

After 4 days of the domain being in SnapName's "Now" Auction, if it still doesn't get any bids, the domain will be dropped & available for hand registration again.

Good Luck!

Do a WHOIS and note the status line. It's expired if status is Inactive and it's
reached its expiration date, then dropped if its status changed to Redemption
Period for 30 days, then Pending Delete after that for 5 days before it's finally
become available for re-registration.

IIRC Network Solutions holds an expired domain name for 35 days before it get
into auction, then drops if no one bid for it or transfers it if someone did. One
other exception is if its registrant "opted out" of their auction before that can
happen, though.

Unfortunately I can't seem to pull up Network Solutions' site on my end, so I'm
not able to read their deletion policy for now. But what I posted above is what
I remember seeing there.

This is from NetworkSolutions whois:

Registrant: Pending Renewal or Deletion

Record expires on 04-Oct-2008
Record created on 04-Oct-2007
Database last updated on 10-Oct-2008

Lock Status: clientTransferProhibited
Web Site Status: Active

I guess this means it's still in the redemption period. Also, it was in the Pre-release NJ auctions, so I guess it still has a while to go before it becomes available.

Thanks for all of the input ~ much appreciated!
