I won an auction and domain expired with namecheap

I won an auction on namecheap 5 days ago, they sent me the payment notification today meaning I wasnt able to pay before today, the payment process wasn't available before today.

The problem is that the domain expired, the "created on" date was reset to today.

Is that normal, that doesn't make much sense to win an auction and have a domain expire. (so even though I won the auction, because the domain expired anybody could've registered it, so basically I paid for an auction for nothing)
