... with the most I've ever spent on a domain name. What's even crazier is that it's about a third of my entire savings right now. I was originally trying to dropcatch lytt.com, which went to open auction and I missed by 20 minutes due to miscalculating the time zone (maybe daylight saving?) and ended up finding ocay.com also in an open auction, and caught it for $2580. I have my own thoughts and I'm confident I made the right decision, and I was even prepared to spend a little more, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks - did I get this for a decent price or have I grossly overpaid?

I like the name, but never buy in haste. Domains are investments and as with all investments - never invest what you cannot afford to lose. "Buy in haste / repent at leisure" etc.

But yeah I think the name is solid.

Hi

In my opinion itโ€™s a good domain , but i wouldnโ€™t have spent 2500$ on it.
Especially if thatโ€™s 1/3 of my entire savings
It could be a long hold

Anyway , i wish you good luck

This one appears to have a history (per Wayback) dating back to 1999.

Cay: Small, low island, usually sandy, situated on a coral reef platform. (Think Bahamas)

Best of luck.

If you bought it and will sell it in the future then donโ€™t post here and ask questions.
The price is set when you have a buyer. No one know what the price will be.

100%, I've said the same thing here elsewhere recently, but sometimes you just have a gut feeling when you need to take a risk. Plus I can definitely still afford to lose ยฃ2K, it would just hurt a lot.

I appreciate the honesty, and thank you!

Thank you! How do you find this kind of info out - subscription to NameBio, or are there free options?

I see your point, but I'm not that bothered about a potential future buyer seeing how much I paid for the domain. I see a highly pronounceable 4L brandable as mostly a long-term investment. Unfortunately I forgot who, but I recently read a great analogy from someone on the forum - good .com domains are like beachfront property in somewhere like California, except they're even rarer than actual beachfront properties. In that sense it's a long-term investment which I'm happy to hold onto until someone offers the right price, and in the meantime I'm confident it will only appreciate in value no matter how many new TLDs get released. I'm also lucky enough that domaining is my hobby and I can afford to wait that long for a sale.

But yeah, it was definitely a crazy purchase, and now that I'm thinking about it, it's the most expensive single product I've ever bought in my life. :xf.eek:

Archive.org for history is free (but they'll ask you to donate).

Other than that, it just takes a little digging around.

Interesting, the Wayback Machine can definitely be useful for checking whether a website existed on a domain, but I didn't think it went back that far.

What also came to mind, the informal/slang term "Vacay" which has gained popularity over time.

Its a 2-syllable 4L name so it should have reasonable appeal. Its also a 4 letter acronym.

But it has the problem that all words with a "c" in them have and which aren't in common use - how is the c pronounced? So it fails the radio test.

Nevertheless, it might still have value way beyond what you paid for it, to someone who doesn't care about the radio test, at least in the short term.

Could turn to be money well spent.

By the way, you should know that I'm unable to see your profile, I get a Member Unavailable error whenever I do. Not sure if it's because you've ignored/blocked my profile or something like that, but I've noticed it with a few accounts and I find it hard to believe I've offended that many people in the short time I've been active on here lol.

Exactly, it's a great name, but imagine trying to communicate it to someone: "Go to okay dot com but with a 'c'"

Makes it a little more clumsy. But then again, how many 4 letter domains pass the radio test anyway.

I mean, I think you just did. I don't think saying "okay with a c" is that hard to do, people do it all the time when they have names with unconventional spellings (very common nowadays), and I think someone buying a 4L brandable in general is going to be spending at least some money on TV/video advertising anyway, since very few of them pass the radio test so easily - how many people mispronounce Nike, Asus and Primark every day? Speaking of Asus, they even made an ad about it, and it's the only reason I know how to pronounce it "properly":

I do appreciate the honest input though.

Even when face to face with someone, they can still misunderstand what is said to them.

At least for the English-speaking world (or maybe it's just the UK, I don't know), "okay with an X" would be pretty commonly understood to mean "replace the most obvious letter(s) with X", like "combat with a K", and especially with names, like "Catherine with a K" or "Stephen with a V".

Nvm I just saw your meme, so you obviously understood what I'm talking about. It's true there's always enough ambiguity for some people to get it wrong, compared to okay.com, but then unlike okay.com it's also a) available, and b) cheaper, and in 5/10/20 years from now (like I said, long-term investment), assuming the internet as we know it is still around then, I think buyers are just gonna be happy to be able to register something even close to it. I also believe these kind of .coms are going to be so rare they could fetch 5-10 times what they could currently. To extend the stolen analogy, it's beachfront property that gets earthquakes every so often - not perfect, but still worth a pretty penny.

Good domain.
Not sure of the value, depends. Not to risk that much amount!

hey hashim this is a great buy not just a good one dont pay too much attention to people penny pinching over a few bucks youll never regret paying a little more in an auction especially when the other bidders had fomo and would probably pay you more right now if youd like i can share a couple of ideas to help you sell it
