There is much debate as to whether or not hyphens in domains really make a difference in SEO purposes. What is everyones thoughts on this? Personally I dont think google really cares whether a domain has a hyphen or not.

I didn't say 'always'; I said 'in most cases'. There are some good hyphenated names but they are not many. The kind of hyphenated names we see regged in hundreds by new comers are simply a waste of money. Let's not mislead them and raise their hopes unnecessarily.

I did'nt say you did, but I did say "good" hyphen domains are not always worthless, to be honest most of the hyphen sales reported surprise me as well but at the end of the day reporting actual sales is hardly misleading anyone. It is what it is.

In general I beleive that a good two word hyphen domain is a far cheaper alternative for endusers or developers who want those exact keywords without having to pay hundreds of thousands to buy the non-hyphen .com domain, that's it in a nutshell.

An example of a good one (IMO) would be:

Log-Cabins.com (1996 reg) at namejet Current High Bid: US $161
(41 bidders 2 days to go)

My experience is that websites with hyphenated domain name require more effort to rank on page one of Google compared to corresponding non-hyphenated domain name. Hyphenated domains do equally well on Bing compared to corresponding non-hyphenated domain name.

Just My opinion. .

If you want a serious business domain name then it would be better to stay away from the hyphen due to having to mention it each time you tell someone your domain name. But for a general website it can mean you can pick up some domains that you might have never being able to register. I can't see it being a problem for SEO, in fact it is probably better if anything since the words are seperated to show a clear meaning.
