There is much debate as to whether or not hyphens in domains really make a difference in SEO purposes. What is everyones thoughts on this? Personally I dont think google really cares whether a domain has a hyphen or not.

If you plan to develop a website then hyphenated domains do not make much difference SEO wise. However if you want to invest in domain names, then hyphenated domains are not a good choice; in most cases they are worthless.

PS: Please note that for SEO purposes, the hyphen must be placed in the right place, such as hotel-reservation.

you see a lot of established hyphenated sites ranking very well with google & yahoo, developers are aware of this - so i don't understand why a lot of domain investors are not.

SEO: Doesn't make a difference.
Legitimacy: Varies from culture to culture.
Branding: Must own both!

There is nothing wrong with keyword domains with one well placed hyphen.

Domainers are much more against hyphens than end users are.

Hyphens are still some of the best deals out there. Estibot, for example, appraised a hyphenated domain I recently acquired for $12 at $160, while the unhyphenated version is appraised at $63,000. Domainers seem to reflect this attitude, though I still can't understand why.

In fact, one of the main arguments against hyphens is that you will get very little type-in traffic - and lose type-in traffic to the unhyphenated domain. Considering type-in traffic is quickly becoming irrelevant, this objection holds no water.

SEO-wise, as far as I know it's neutral as long as it's natural.

Double/Triple are a bit much :imho:. I would never click on such anyway.

Develop the hyphenated names you have and see how they earn.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck!

In terms of SEO, I believe as long as they're keyword rich, makes sense and have decent amount of exact searches, they'll make it pretty well, especially when developed.

If you just plan to park them and hopefully make money through that, then you're at a loss as ppl don't really initiate typing in hyphens (unless you're German? I hear they like that there).

I hear hyphenated domains are picking up sales. Seems end-users love em just as much :)

Anyway, Yeah, try developing. good luck!

I seldom see any such domains sell - just saying :)

I'd say good hyphen domains are "worth less" but not always worthless. ;)

I didn't say 'always'; I said 'in most cases'. There are some good hyphenated names but they are not many. The kind of hyphenated names we see regged in hundreds by new comers are simply a waste of money. Let's not mislead them and raise their hopes unnecessarily.

Just watched CNBC..

2 companies mentioned using or redirecting hyphenated domains.

1-800-flowers(.)com

1-800-got-junk(.)com

looks good on the side of the service vehicles.

I like hyphens, but then again I stare at German names most hours of the day, so they actually come in pretty handy. I'd rather look at a legible hyphenated name than one that's too long and hard to read.

If the keywords are good, the hyphen won't really matter. Sure, the price will never be the same (in the U.S. market) as the non-hyphenated version, but it still offers a great return.

If you travel enough and pay attention to details, you'll see hyphens, crappy extensions, you name it. I saw a .CC on a billboard in Bowling Green, OH, last week, and a local publishing company displaying a .US sign in their window in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
