Hi

I own only one .com domain which I purchased and registered on godaddy last year for a website I am creating. The domain was transferred to a free host and a site created and currently active.
My question is how do I renew it? I just did a whois search and it expires beginning of October 2007.

Will godaddy send me an email to renew?
Will my current host send me an email to renew (They offer renewals)?
Will nobody contact me and if I miss the deadline anyone can grab my domain? :(

Thanks for your help

Patrick

There should be no need to transfer the domain to a host.

Does the domain show up in your godaddy account?

What is important is the registrar, not the host.

go to domaintools.com/[putyourdomainhere].com

And see who it says the registrar is. Then contact them to ensure the domain is renewed ;)

Depending on who the name is registered with, there would be a grace period of around a month in which you can renew the domain, but they would probably charge additional fees.

I appreciate the help.

Does the domain show up in your godaddy account?

Yes it does, I just checked, they have me on "Auto" renewal along with "auto" renewal membership. I am glad you told me to check, I wasn't aware of it.

go to domaintools.com/[putyourdomainhere].com

Yes godaddy is listed there as the registrar.

Now question, can I select another registrar? I want out of godaddy I don't really like their forced tactics.
Any recommendation on the cheap? (Godaddy $9)

Thanks a lot

In this case you would have to renew at Godaddy.

Yes, .com domains can be transferred to other registrars. One of the populars is namecheap.com.

Just curious what kind of "forced tactics" are you talking about?

Well when I signed with them I had a coupon and when i went to enter it, it was never accepted, I emailed and they answered some non sense that I don't remember.
As far as forced tactic they had me on "Auto" renewal for my account and my domain re-registration. I don't remember authorizing this, I would have said "No way", it's probably disguised in their agreement.
If I didn't catch the membership renewal my credit card would have been charged.
You have to read everything with godaddy along with your lawyer and I don't have time for this for my only domain. I like trusty business that doesn't try to fool me and show everything upfront.
Search "google" and this board for "godaddy" you will find interesting stuff.

Good-luck

Patrick
