"One of the worst things a domain investor could do is publish an asking price for their domain name on a public website. Far worst is asking a bunch of strangers to appraise your domain names value on a public message board."

How far do you agree?

Think search!
Domainers use search to get information on domains they might purchase.
So, you have an appraisal on NP?
It is searchable!
Carry on from there....

1) You are imprisoned by the price you set. You will mostly get low-ball offers if the price is low, and no offers if the price too high.
2) Valuations derived on appraisal threads are always low-ball because they don't see the value which you see.

These are both bad if these are in the SERPS because any prospective buyer will search Google for the domain name they wish to buy, and be influenced by what he finds in the SERPS.

Sure, 100%, if you are selling to domainers, maybe even educated buyers. Fortunately most buyers are for small businesses and buying a domain off the secondary market is totally new to them. Just depends on who you sell too I guess. Just another reason to not treat them like baseball; cards to be traded and collected among your friends.

This is another case of someone wanting to argue their chocolate is better than your vanilla. There are many different selling strategies, the first thing one needs to be honest about, "You have no clue what someone else's monthly nut is, standard of living, the extent of their full inventory, their psychological approach to both selling anything and domaining."

BuyDomains sets prices they have sold thousands of names, Rick Schwartz does not set prices he has sold far fewer names but for incredible prices. Both have been aware of one another for more than a decade, neither decided to change because of the other.

HugeDomains sets prices, if you email Mike Berkens on a name he will give you a price, probably higher than you would like but he will give you the price.

Then you have buyers who will only deal with prices, I have had clients on the buy side who have told me find me a domain with a price, I will not make an offer.

There is no one perfect strategy.

I agree with the first part, but only when you set something really low now, then later try to get something insane price for it, in short time mind you. but I don't think it's far worse to ask a bunch of strangers to appraise your domain, in the end you set the price.
