The main thing you can do is to make sure domains that do have registrar lock potential use it.

Also some domains are stolen by people using social engineering ie gaining as much information about you from various sources and then phoning up your registrar claiming to have a problem and needing to access your account.

Other considerations are that you may have a weak password on your account (try to use long passwords with random numbers and letters (in a mix of upper and lower cases). Ensure that your email account is secure (if someone gets control of your email then they can simply do a normal transfer request or a lost password request with most websites). Ensure you log out all of the time. Ensure that your whois information is correct (for example the email address is still in use, your address etc are correct)

How is it possible?
How can someone prove that he is you?

There are at least 3 fairly resurceful ways of stealing a domain name that hasn't been mention that comes to mind... but I don't think it would be beneficial to post them in public.

Best advice I can give is to keep email current and not to use a public email provider i.e hotmail for quality names.

Also, don't keep your names at small, 1 man registrars or resellers... thats just asking for trouble.

Moniker doesn't support a huge range of ccTLDs

When you phone a company they tend to ask for the same sort of information so if you can find those pieces of information then it is possible you could fool the company into thinking you are the customer in question.

For example typical questions you may get asked:-

Date of birth (you probably enter these dates on a regular basis on web forms)
Your address (that's easy it is in the whois)
Mothers maiden name (can be found typically using genealogy sites provided you have other information on the user)

Of course there are a lot more possible questions but it is a start.

Remember the weakest link in an organisation are it's staff.
