It can since the potential hijacker won't necessarily know your actual details
to compromise. However, be aware you might have difficulty demonstrating
you're the registrant of that domain name should problems occur. (knock on
wood...)

Look no further than the Registerfly meltdown to give you the worst possible
scenario of using WHOIS privacy. Then again, keep records and you should be
fine for the most part.

Whois privacy is a double-edged sword. As Dave says it's more difficult to demonstrate ownership in case of problems (PS: there is a whois archive at domaintools that can be used to establish the ownership trail).
Note that in response to the registerfly debacle a data escrow scheme will be implemented soon for .com & .net domains.
