Hey all,

I am finally going to try and buy compuXP.com ... but ew: www.compuxp.com

I sent the guy an email (info at compuxp dot com) and haven't heard from him. I don't expect him to reply.

If he doesn't respond from that, I'll send him an email from his WHOIS address... but my question:

What should I offer?

What to offer depends on how bad you want it. I wouldn't offer anything, but then again, I don't really want the domain. If you can't find anything you like that's available, then you have to bite the bullet and pay the guy. It doesn't look like it's doing much good just sitting there, so he might be willing to let it go. I would through out an lower offer and see if you need to go higher.

When asking for a price, often the domain holder will get dollar signs in their eyes and the negotiations start out on the wrong foot.

Really my best strategy is to just shoot over an offer of what I'm willing to pay, or perhaps 30-40% less to leave room for a counteroffer.

It's a developed site and it seems itโ€™s the name of their company too. Iโ€™m afraid they wonโ€™t sell it unless your make a really nice offer and I donโ€™t think itโ€™s worth it.

You should always research an owner in detail before making an offer. It will give you a good idea of who you are dealing with what kind of price they might expect.

There are no other names owned by the same person in my whois archive. This is not to say he doesn't have any, but he's not anywhere are prolific as say yourself, who returns a few dozen archived results.

A quick google shows that he used to, but no longer does, advertise his services.

His site has a crap design and won't display right in firefox. It's safe to assume it's not a major source of business for him.

You've got his address, and a google of it turns up plenty of results for apartments in the area. I'd check the prices in his building as it will give you an excellent idea of what sort of money the guy has.

If he's got the top floor penthouse of a 5 star serviced apartment then he probably won't accept any offer you consider reasonable. If he's in a slum he might jump at an offer of a weeks rent.

But my best advice is if you can't pick this one up for dirt cheap to pick a new name. You can easily โ€œrebrandโ€ yourself as something equally or more memorable than CompuXP for reg fee or $xx here. Think about it. Next year you'll have to buy CompuVista.com :)

I think you have not many chances. Anyway, give them a phone call. It may work much better than any email. And be ready to name your price during the call.

If I really wanted it I would offer up to $100.
If I was slobbering with desire then I would go to $250.
but after that forget it! :p :p :p

Lol, after reading your wonderful advice (Thanks too), I don't really feel like I want to pay the price of the domain anymore! :(

Perhaps later, maybe a more brandable name... that is available ;) Like dotxp.com, that's cool.
