Hi, I am looking at a domain which is currently in its redemption period. I would like to order this domain name when it gets sent to pre-release if that is possible. I have checked the top places I know of for pre-release status, namejet, snapnames, dynadot and godaddy. It should go to pending delete on April 14, so I may just be too soon. How soon after entering pre-release status do the domains get listed and is there a list as to which registrar list at which location? The domain name I am looking at is registered at domain.com.

Thanks for the assistance.

You can download NameJet Pre-Release lists Here
You can download SnapNames In-Auction names and more Here

Hope this helps!

To find where a domain is listed during its pre-release period, you can check auction platforms like NameJet, SnapNames, GoDaddy Auctions, or Dynadot. These sites often list domains in redemption or pre-release status. If the domain is registered at domain.com, it might also be listed on their platform or specific registrar auctions. Make sure to monitor multiple services, including turhost.co to increase your chances of securing the domain when it becomes available.

To find where a pre-release name is listed, check the documentation, release notes, or version history for the software or product you're working with. You can also search through code repositories or configuration files if you're dealing with software development.

The time would differ based on the platform.

This is a 10 year old thread but I'm replying to it since it was bumped to the top and could use some more insight.

FWIW, backordering from the registrar where the domain is dropping can sometimes give you an advantage, but itโ€™s not always the fastest or most effective method.
  1. Registrar Control โ€“ Some registrars have exclusive agreements with drop-catching services, meaning they may prioritize their own auction or backorder system before releasing the domain to the general market.
  2. Drop-Catching Services โ€“ Platforms like DropCatch.com and SnapNames operate across multiple registrars and use automated systems to flood requests the moment a domain becomes available, increasing the chances of securing it.
  3. Auction Risks โ€“ Even if you backorder through the original registrar, if the domain is desirable, it may still go to auction, where competing bidders can drive up the price.
  4. Timing & Volume โ€“ Drop-catching services often have access to hundreds of registrars, increasing their ability to grab domains faster than a single registrarโ€™s backorder system.
If the domain isnโ€™t highly competitive, backordering from the original registrar might work. But for valuable domains, using a specialized drop-catching service will significantly improve your chances.

Suggestion
  1. First check your favorite whois tool to identify the registrar the domain you want is with. Then check to see if they typically push to auction or allow direct catching.
  2. Generally, SnapNames and DropCatch are the fastest drop catching services, so pick the one you like the best.
  3. Backorder at the registrar the domain is at and if the registrar doesn't have priority (Or tends to push to auction) use one of the fastest drop catching services to increase the odds of getting it.
Note: As previously mentioned, depending on the registrar, the domain could go to auction when or before it officially drops. That generally happens when 2 or more people backorder the same domain.

For instance:
  • Single Backorder โ€“ If only one person places a backorder, they get the domain if the registrar successfully catches it (Not in all cases though).
  • Multiple Backorders โ€“ The domain enters a backorder auction, where all interested parties can bid for it. The starting bid is usually the backorder price, and the first person to place the backorder may get the initial bid advantage.
  • Drop-Catch Services โ€“ Some platforms, like DropCatch, run public auctions, meaning anyone can bid, even if they didnโ€™t place a backorder. Others, like SnapNames and NameJet, run private auctions, limited to those who backordered the domain.
I suppose, the less eyeballs you have on the domain, regardless if it goes to auction or not will increase the chances of you getting it (No other backorders or bidders = best acquisition price).

Added note: You mentioned Domain.com as the registrar, so the following may apply:
  • Expiration & Grace Period โ€“ When a domain expires, the original owner has a redemption grace period (usually 30-90 days) to renew it.
  • Pending Delete Phase โ€“ If the owner doesnโ€™t renew, the domain enters a pending delete status for about 5 days, after which it is fully released.
  • Drop-Catching Attempts โ€“ Domain.com and other registrars use automated systems to attempt registration the moment the domain drops.
  • Backorders & Auctions โ€“ If multiple people place a backorder, the domain may go to auction, where the highest bidder wins.
  • Public Availability โ€“ If no backorders exist, the domain becomes available for first-come, first-served registration.
Questions to ask yourself
  • So, I guess the question is, are feeling lucky enough nobody else will backorder it?
  • Or, should you backorder it, just in case and chance someone seeing the domain was already backordered by 1 person and ecouraging them to compete with you, thinking the domain must have value if someone backordered it already?
