Are you getting organic traffic? And is this traffic increasing? If yes, then you are doing good

You can just concentrate on content and backlinks, ranking in SERPs will automatically improve.

I tool i use to check my position in serps is "Rank checker" from seobook. It's a firefox plugin and allows you to check google, yahoo and Microsoft for certain keywords. Might be worth checking out.

while generally in the proper range, its results are inaccurate for me.

use Google Webmaster Tool, it's official tool to check serp and you can get all the keywords ranking.

gwt isn't that up-to-date or accurate. if you just have a few keywords to check, then it's probably faster to just do it yourself.
