How much money is tied up in the domain name market? Worldwide

I'm just wondering where I can find estimates as to how big of an industry the domain name market is? Basically how much money is currently tied up in registrations and what are the annual aftermarket sales, worldwide? I'm not really talking about developed websites, just domains alone, parked and mini-sites. Also stats from years back and charts showing the market growth.

Thanks,
GG

Somewhere between $100,000,000 and $1,000,000,000 in aftermarketable domains across the net I would say :D

And T2H is doing his best to increase that figure :)

Hmmm, that would be a hard thing to measure because you'd have to subtract out all the domains that have developed sites on them.

I couldn't even venture a guess, other than that it is an insane amount of money. :$:

$1billion would be around the current annual revenues from parking alone. I would estimate the industry is worth around $6-$10 billion in terms of the value of aftermarket domains.

It's a multi-billion dollar industry ... I guess take the amount of total registrations and then multiply them by an average yearly registration / renewal fee, and then add the average of the last few years annual "reported sales" (and some reasonable number for unreported sales) ... and VOILA! :$: :music:

This would be exclusive of any parking revenues, and obviously developed websites and incorporated brands that are, together, already making shedloads :$: (a la Google, etc)! :talk:

Just a guesstimate, to get you started IMHO.

I don't think I really have the time, right now, to put all the estimates and stats together.

I think I like Devil_Dogs answer alot.

Exactly (give or take)! :p

Tough one to nail down ... but worthy for discussion and guesstimate purposes, IMHO. :gl:

Good point ... we'll also have to add up what people spent on these (average annually), and then use that figure as part of the "tied up in registrations" figure (versus their actual value (value can be another discussion (unless actually completed / sold), as I'm thinking about it now), IMHO. Next, somehow, we need to get an average of realistic aftermarket sales that have actually completed and verified (versus just being "reported") ... public and private ... and then annualize that number and add it to the registrations figure above, I believe. :gl:
Just some thoughts.

Dont forget though, Netsol, Register.com and a couple of others still charge $35 a pop and I believe they still have over half a million names regged there a piece.

I think I would also consider parking revenues to be a part of the figure. Without the intentions of resale later on, there would not be nearly as many parked domains. The domain name market perpetuates the parked domains advertising market.
