Hello,
I'm not talking about just the aftermarket sales and sales made to end users, but rather the whole pie.. what domainers and the registrars pull... is it a billion dollar industry?

My google search queries brought up nothing.

Thanks.

Godaddy´s 2009 revenue alone seems to have topped $750 million.

If you've watched Superbowl games in the last 2 or 3 years you might have seen Godaddy's commercial. That alone can tell you that they are making a lot of money.

com'on someone has to know... what did the industry as a whole make in 2009? All one need to do to find the figures for say the pharmaceutical market is google it (over $300 billion in US alone in 2009). If you know the numbers, share it.

I don't know the figures, but it is a multi billion dollar industry.

88 million .com domains registered -> average registration fee $8
13 million .net domain registered -> average registration fee $6
8.4 million .org domains registered -> average registration fee $7
6.5 million .info domains registered
2.2 million .biz domains...

don't forget the ccTLDs....

Its hard to be exact because not every registry publicly discloses their sales data. And many after market domain sales are private sales.

However, based on "Domain name registry and registrar fees" paid to ICANN (20 cents a name), they collected around $55 million in 2009.

Based on that number, I guesstimate a $5 to $7 billion global domain industry, annually.

ICANN only collects from the gTLDs, not from the ccTLDs.

Godaddy has enormous market share. Would be interesting to check their financial results.

Its my understanding that ICANN does collect from ccTLDs but these are various fixed fees, based on contractual agreements or services provided, as opposed to a per name fee.

The primary domain registration market makes most of the money, as much at 95% of annual turnover imho. That means registries/registrars/resellers etc.

Domain investment or resale of previously registered domains accounts for only 5%, if that.

Though the whole business makes over $2 Billion / year. 200mm domains x $10 (avg reg fee) = $2,000,000,000.

Don't forgets the Google's stake in the pie.. probably in their earnings report.
