Domaining is often advertised as a lucrative, always get rich industry, which is certainly not the case. Many people have lost a lot in this industry. Anyone care to share their story?

Iv'e lost about 500 USD.. Some were a complete waste, yes, but a certain amount (about 30%) of it was invested in the favor of exploring, investigating, and buying.
It's quite heavy for me because im serving the army at the monent, but i 'm eager to return the investment asap !

Hello, when interested in the world of domains, which have more value is the intuition when choosing a domain, so if not pay a great price at first. When experience gets the rest comes rolled.

I lost money twice over the dot xxx now sold 3 times with new and registerfly both assured would get first dibs when made TLD. Lost on all extensions other than dot com, net and org as anything else other than country is going to sting again and again.

Evolve with the game those just parking not back linking or not doing any form of development are leaving things to chance. If you can offer back links with your domain you can ask for more and offer them targeted markets. Even domains you plan to drop can bring you some traffic.

May I ask Where do you check for backlinks?

You might wanna slow down a bit. Seems like a lot of money.

Depends on the domains he got, really. One month is not relevant enough, passive selling means long waiting.

Otherwise, domains are nice;)

I lost $200 on my first attempt at selling domains 4 years back when I lost interest and gave up in a month or two. Back then I only hand regged and lacked knowledge on acquiring aftermarket domains. My second attempt, however, has been a fruitful one. I started about 3 months back and I already made an 850 USD and an 250 USD sale on sedo. Good for a comeback I'd say. I think, picking names is an art to be mastered while staying afloat on your investments.

One of the most famous and successful domainers spent (In the beginning) $300,000 on a portfolio worth an estimated $10k.

He didn't give up and is now on top of this game.

In profit overall. And I'm a buyer rather than a seller/trader (I generally bought to develop rather than trade).

But, I did accidentally overbid on a NamePros Live Auction by $300. For a .mobi domain. I did have a plan for it, but got sidetracked and wanted to sell the name. I could never sell it and eventually dropped it. So down nearly $700 (including renewal fees) for that domain.

Who was it Chris?
That's sheer grit & hard work i guess.

Domaining has been very profitable for me thus far, started buying names about 8-9 months back, and started selling names a month or two later, and i have enough funds to acquire nice xxxx/ xxxxx gems from the aftermarket.
I acquire names to flip quickly, invest for longer periods, and to develop.

Great business all in all, if backed by lots of research.
