How much did you invest in domains?

Hi :) Just wondering how much money you have put and if you break even with domain names!

Personally I started almost 1 year ago, and invested a lot. I purchased a subscription to a domainers forum worth $300, and bought more than 150 domains (.COM, .NET, IDNs and ccTLDs). I think that I have reached investing $1500 approximately. At this you should add 2 Sedo featured listings, some ebay auctions and some more paid subscriptions (low $xx) I only have had a few small sales, say 2 or 3 domains, totalling $60 in total. I made $30 from parking so far, so I am way far from my break even.

Just wanted to know from you fellow domainers what were your results and how much did you have to wait to see the light :hehe: cheers!

I'm at the cusp of 700 domains now. About half of those were registered and the other half were purchased from resellers. I'd hate to add up all of the money I've sunk into domains in the last year--which has been a building year. I'm in this for the long haul so I'm not worried that I haven't broken even just yet.

We've invested somewhere around $190,000 over the last 2 years, not including renewals.

Have been in the business for close to 5 years full time.

We are profitable.

We park, we're not in the business of selling domains, but from time to time we will sell the odd one if the offer is right.

I started as a good ol' fashioned webmaster back in 1998...been in and out of the domain market since then. I've invested thousands into domains, subscriptions, software, fees, etc. and I've earned back mid-high XX,XXX. Right now, I'm back into building a portfolio have a little over 30 names that I plan on developing. It's going to be a busy summer for me I know that much.

Invested approximately $5,000 over the last six months - a few pickups at Snap to provide some anchor names in various sectors, and then a lot of mining and hand-regs. Close to 500 domains now. No reselling. I'm a hoarder, for the lack of a better term.

All will be developed in one form or another - be it 'lemonade stands' with AdSense, a group of related-topic sites driving traffic as a unit, or vertical markets in growing industries. Focusing a lot on local search. Not profitable yet, as development takes time and more money, but it'll come. Making xxx a month parking right now. Nothing earth shattering, but pays for my beer money and more handregs without hitting the home account. And that keeps my wonderful and understanding spouse happy(er).

It's a bit more of a challenge getting into the game later than the Big Boys, but there's still plenty of room for growth in this industry, and there's a lot of money to be made if done right. Good luck to each.

~$7000 invested
~$6500 in sales
18 month time frame

I also take the view of fonzie. I see now as a time for planning for to be profitable in the future. Hence, I'm contemplating a $XX,XXX investment currently.

I was always into running various sites and hosting others sites and decided to take a stab at the aftermarket of domains just about 3 years ago. I sold my first domain at 1,000 and that followed shortly with a $500, $1300, $1500 and a few 100-500 sales as well. I also started brokering or obtaining domains for others and that has made some good cash as well. So I don't have any super huge sales yet but all of my domain registrations are $8 hand registered domains and the most I ever paid for a domain that was already registered was around $70 at namepros auction once. I have bought domains for thousands but they were for clients so not my money. Currently only sitting on just over 100 domains. I sell one and then I either renew all of my domains for a year or reinvest a percentage of the profit into new ones. So if 100 domains can be renewed for $700-$900 per year basically I figure 1 sale at 1k covers registration on them all and any other sales for the year are pure profit. I build up my collection slower than most but I have never let a name drop and I'm definitely ahead somewhere in this range xx,xxx (tax man may be watching :hehe: ) since I started 3 years ago. The hunting and brokering for other people has taken time away from my own sales so I need to get back on the ball as currently I have slowed down my own investing until I get around to marketing my current domains to end users. So I guess what started as a hobby has turned out to be a fun profitable little business. I could let all of my domains drop today and be ahead and walk away from the game, this is the reason I am building at a slower pace than most as I have nothing to lose when ahead, I got a few gems hidden for the long run and the rest are generally 2 word generic domains that have been selling when I get around to the marketing aspect, also have a few crappy domains as well but you never know what someone will come looking for, so no huge sales here but when you buy them all for $7-$9 a 500-2k offer isn't that bad I guess, still waiting on that huge sale.

Started with $100 3+ years ago and made my money back the next day. Been flipping abit like Jay ever since. I could walk away today (actually have been consideriing it, again...lol) satisfied with my investments. 75 local related names stashed away that I've collected during that time which would and should be keeping me busy but I never seem to get around to them. I let very few drop and renew very few (outside of my personal collection). I've never owned more than 750 names at one time, less than 300 currently and have sold over 1000 this year alone (mostly bulk sales).
