When is the last time you saw someone type in http:// then the web address? It has been a while for me. I still see some people type www. then the address. Most people know, even without any advertising campaign you can just type the web address. Lots of people know when you use chrome as your browser you don't have to type in google to do a search, you just do it in the address bar.
I don't see the new gtlds being a big stretch from that, people will just get it overtime that anything can be to the right of the dot. Yes for some time, the .com will remain the default, but people will get it, just like you don't see very many people typing in http:// anymore. It is only a matter of time.
The few handful of other gtlds that have been released over the years, never helped people to bridge that gap. There was just not enough developed sites on those extensions. One could argue what is happening now is much the same. I don't agree with that. I did at first, but I t think we will see many more sites being developed with these new names and people will get it.
That is my two cents anyway for what it is worth. You can read my posts from years back and I was not a fan of these new gtlds, but I will be picking up a few more here and there if the left and the right of the dot make sense.
