I'm just curious as to how long you keep your domains. Do you sell your domains on quite quickly or do you find yourself waiting a long time to sell?

For me it depends on the domain...

Many times I will keep a domain for a while to develop a website that makes money with an affiliate program and then when it's not making money anymore or the traffic on the site slows down I will then delete the website and sell off the domain.

Both, depends how long it takes to align the right buyer/offer. Some I've sold the same year and others have held for many years. Would say most I've sold for mid x,xxx I've had for 2-4 years on average. Patience is key "IF" the domain quality warrants it as a few years renewal fees versus just 1 year only adds a minimal cost if able to sell in the x,xxx range.

The "rule of thumb" is a domainer sells 5% of his portfolio in any given year. So that's a 20 year time frame. If you are doing better than that and have positive cash flow, you are on the right track.

for as long as it takes for me, as long as there's buyer for it. Developing comes natural until I forget that I'm selling then someone offers.

It really depends on the name.
I have let names go that I regged last year, and I still have a few names that I regged back in 1998

:]

Depends on the domain. I've held domains for years, and some I've sold within a week and a half. If you see an opportunity to buy a flippable domain name, you can possibly get it done pretty quickly.

On average, about 3 years. I don't drop my domains, I keep them until they sell.

@domainbartender - Wow!!! Turning over 33% of your portfolio a year is fantastic!!!

Not so much when my sales price is low :)

I sell them cheap to liquidate quickly. Of course this doesn't apply to every domain I own, some will be in the vault for a long time to come.

How cheap were the sales?

If you sold cheap, will the profits be enough to cover the cost of renewal for the rest of your unsold domains?

If you subtract the cost of renewals from your profits, how huge would the net profit be?

Is your net profit huge enough to say it was worth all the effort in looking for buyers?

I break even most of the time, focusing my efforts on acquiring better quality domains to put in my portfolio.

When you say "focusing my efforts on acquiring better quality domains", do you mean buying more expensive domains from another Domainer's portfolio (via direct purchase or domain auction), then reselling them again at even higher prices?

Hi

when you're breaking even, you're losing money...

if you place any value on the "time" spent researching, negotiating, unlocking/transferring, fee's/commissions, etc. for each and every domain sale or acquisition.

imo...

And if you're breaking even, then you can no longer buy any more domains (let alone better quality ones). Simply because, you're breakeven. You have no more money.

You would have needed to add additional money into the equation. Which, of course, by doing so it would make your buying-and-selling cheap domains completely irrelevant and practically useless.

I may be making a loss some of the time, but sometimes selling one domain is enough to get you back on track. It's not all about making money for me, I'm in this for fun.

I'm renew & keep a valuable portfolio and try to sell unprofitable domains. Also If you need for a funds for renewal, you may also sell your 1 valuable domain and renew all others
