Hi all just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on this subject. At present it seems the people in the know are aquiring lots of names, parking, or developing and making some good money out of domaining. However the general public have no idea about this market, or that it even exisits.

I dont know about people in the USA, but certainly in the UK domaining is unknown.

So I wanted to see whether people think it will remain 'quiet' or there will be a point where major news items may pick up on something like the price of a domain sale or the revenue some people are making.

Probably didn't articulate myself to well there but interested in some thoughts....

In the USA it has actually been in news stories and such. I had a link that had a bunch of clips about domaing in the news. They always talk about the sex.com sale though.

Domaining certainly seems to receive a lot more bad rep over in the states than it does here in the UK but it has received negative rep in some internet centric magazines for example.

I think as more people turn it into a full time job, it will continue to receive more mainstream media attention.

By then, most of the good domains should be gone and those of us that have been doing this for awhile (even as a hobby) should profit quite nicely.

Thanks to Google, domaining has got attention from the media in China.

Google reportedly paid tens of millions of dollars to buy g.cn, google.cn and google.com.cn domains according to Chinese media.

G.cn is called the shortest possible domain name in the world.

The launch of g.cn is considered as Google's desperate attempt to catch up in China where Google's market share has slided to just about 20%.(Baidu 62%, Yahoo 10%)

You would be surprised, but from my domaining experience even leaders of big companies have little or no knowledge of domains.

It already has gotten massive attention in 2007. This has a positive and negative impact on domainers. It hurts those who are trying to acquire domains but benefits those who are selling.

That's why many people get ripped off by bad domain registrars.

The biggest publicity the industy has seen recently has been negative (NetSol) Actually made it to a lot of public news sites and such. Even yahoo had some words for it.

there will be the odd article about it, in industry sites and mags. the odd mainstream paper runs an article now and then.
don't see much changing really.
we all love it and find it fascinating, i see more people taking up domaining every day, and companies 'have' to gain a better understanding of the net, seo and domains, but think of it this way...........

the developed websites and big sales get the covergae and quite rightly too.
facebook.com, myspace, rent.com etc

people like to see real sites/products, something interesting and success stories and the resultant sales.
for the public outside domaining they will (even if they understand) just see this as buying and selling shares. which frankly to them is boring.

if a big company, really interesting with a new angle gets snapped up, the sale gets reported, more so than joe bloggs made 5 million selling some stock today.

of course the sex.com sales are headline grabbers, but i dont see much changing in next few years interms of media coverage imho :sold:

many people here in brazil use internet but domaining is unknown here like it is in many other countries... people dont have an idea what is going on in this industry

many people dont like domaining due to cybersquatting and this is shown many times, much more than businesses done everyday... i think many of these things happen because there are missing rules (as domaining isnt an old thing comparing to what society is used to) so day by day things are getting clear and there will be debates to create more and better rules what will make domaining well seen

Whenever I see something mentioned, it's almost always casting a negative light on domaining, referring to all domainers as "cybersqautters" (which, obviously, is not true). :td:

There has already been quiet a few good articles (suprisingly with similar titles!) in the US so there's bound to be even more competition as these increase. Great news for those that got in early < not me :)

In the post-Soviet zone it is the same situation - most people do not understand domain business.

I think we all should do something to bring the domain Business to work.

We have to start talking about this Business with everyone and tell people how good this Business is, even some will like to start buying domains, otheres will start olelcting them, others areg oing to develop and so on and on.

I am sure we are in the fastest growing Industry right now.

We need it to be on the news so that when I say I am a domainer I dont have to explain what a domain is :)

i agree with everything you wrote bemarnet but it isnt that easy at least here in brazil

i will tell what i see here
the best names as we all know are generic ones and small names (LLL and now LLLL) so when i talk about a generic name people say "wow, i dindt know these names could be sold for this ammount of money bla, bla, bla"; it means they didnt know such market even exists but they understand it is possible but when i talk about small names (LLL and LLLL) it seems i am talking in any language than mine because, first of all, there are acronyms here but they are not so common as in the usa or in europe and they very often ask me "how this (for instance DENO.com was sold for almost $5,000) can be sold for so much money?" and, believe me, it is very hard to explain them even using the definition of scarcity (these names are finite) and etc

if domain business was known to many people it would be very good for us as we are the industry and we have already some names... more people would surely increase the reseller prices very quickly and i think it would increase after a period end-users' number as well

People see domaining and boring and confusing. Maybe a Hollywood Movie would be what the industry would need to get the concept across in a good light.
