Hi,

I have a wee question for you guys: How do you describe what .tv is, will be, could be... to friends, advertisers, other companies??

Here is how i started to think of this:

I have plenty of contacts in the Uk Crane Hire business (big machines that lift stuff0 & I own Cranes.tv, i plan to make it a Guide to UK Crane Business with lots of video from manufacturers, cranes for sale, interviews ( i have a clear vision , just dunno how to explain it properly yet)

I was talking to one of my friends within the industy who owns a large Training business & trying to explain to him what the site will be like & how it is different than the .com he always advertises on.

SO i started by saying "it will be like a Internet TV Channel for the Crane Industry"
then..
"think a cross between a normal .com website & the video influence of TV"

then i went on and on talkin in circles and saying very little.

What i would like to know is how do you guys plan explaining what your .tv site will be & how its different than .com

Hope that made a little sense  If not then just ignore me ;)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

"Plus, it's shorter to type then .com"

I like to use this line when I am trying to promote a .tv name to somebody:

" The dot-com bubble burst in the nineties, dot-com's time is passing! With the growing popularity of video online and the introduction of IPTV, Dot-TV is the logical successor. Dot-TV is the next king of the internet."

Then I like to site some examples:

"... we can already see this happening with huge companies prefering .tv over their .com websites such as budwieser beer which promoted their site bud.tv during the superbowl, leaving their .com site out to dry!"

(you could use examples from the dot-tv sightings threadin this forum.)

I also like to add that .tv sites will be better than .com sites. A simple explaination like this really makes people excited:

" Most dot-com sites are held by 'cybersquatters' who hold a domain name and put up a default link site, you've seen them before because they all look pretty much the same and you usually just hit "back" in your browser when you see one. A company called Demand Media, which manages the .tv extension as of this month has offered a rich media and social networking site to all .tv owners. This means that even a default 'parked' .tv website will actually be a media rich channel. Internet users will soon realize that .tv sites are better than their .com counterparts! "

well thats all for now.

I actually have a sales pitch that is 2 pages long.

Not all .tv extension owners it may be worth noting .. only those with their preferred registrars!

Not everything in a sales pitch is true...

.tv-

its the peoples tld.

thats what i see. there those who say- that name is reg fee, it has nothing to do with tv..... to me, that is the beauty of tv- it doesnt have to do with tv- yes names like dramaseries.tv are great, but with .tv, so is poop.tv-because unlike all ther other tlds, i think .tv is the tld people will say, hey, that can be personally me! .tv is PERSONAL to ME.

my name is dottie- to me, dottie.com and dottie.tv have two different feels, two different purposes... i think, the regualr people out there will be able to relate to .tv better- it like gives them permission to be them, online, the way they want-

i love .tv - its different than com- the playing field is on different turf, where loans.tv may not ever be as popular as funky.tv- its the peoples tld.

take my Jack.tv, that someone else needs to bid on- its already being done! JackTV- google it- i emailed them to let them know about the sedo auction- it would be PERFECT for them- but see, they were doing it without even owning the tv- its too cool, .tv :)

I say the following: There have been three great killer applications online.

1. The first is email
2. The second is text-based search
3. Video is likely to be the third

Given how successful and established .com already is, .tv is a logical home for video oriented websites

(I don't even attempt to argue .tv being better than .com. I would just concede the point up front that if you had a choice to have loan.com vs loan.tv given to you as a present that you should take loan.com. What I say is that .tv is a great place to test and work on video based models and for now is much more affordable than .com)

I would be interested in Local Experts jumping into this discussion to since he has experience in talking to very non-video oriented industries (e.g. pest control) about .tv

Thanks guys, i never expected so many well thought out replies (i guess many of us where thinking on same lines)

Local if you are watching then please join in and tell us how you describe .tv to your clients & persuade them its the better option that .com

Keep the replies coming if more of you guys are thinking about this, i have had some real trouble so far explaining to some possible sponsors how i see the future of .tv sites in their sector even though im sure they will be keen once the site is there to be tested though ideally i wanted a main sponsor set up before development started so we have set up costs covered but maybe i am being too optimistic when working with a new product.
