How Do I Stop Forum SPAM Posters In VBulletin?

I have a forum I run & it's constantly getting hit by SPAM posters. I turn my back & BAM, a ton of new spam posts are posted all over my forum.

It runs on VBulletin, I have the captcha feature enabled for registering an account & somehow they manage to do damage.

Are there any features built into VB to stop these posts? Or do I need to custom code something - such as a captcha for each post? Seems like a major inconvenience to the regular users.

I'm no VB expert, so any advice is appreciated. I am getting ready to go live with my forum, so I need to take care of this asap.

Should be in admin cp options.

under vbbulletin options - banning options.. paste the ips in the banned box!

login to vb admin panel
click on vb options
click on expand setting groups
on the right text box, click on B to go instantly to Banned IP Address
copy/paste the ip addresses that you wish to block/ban

I use Akismet for my vBulletin forum! :D The option is in the admin panel under 'vBulletin Options'. I'm using the a free Wordpress.com Akismet code and so far so good.

Thanks everyone, your advice has really helped me out. I will be banning IP's and implementing the mods recommended here.

I recommend sending a member's first few posts into the moderation queue. On a forum I was an admin on, that's where we'd catch a lot of it.

I'm also using the Akismet Spam protection. The same key that you use for a WP install is working within vB. If all else fails, register a new WP account which will get you a new Akismet key. Copy and paste into your vB setup and voila` - all set.

Try installing some mods for vB that help prevent bot registrations. Also increase the difficulty of the CAPTCHA code if you use one, using a harder foreground and background x-y noise with varying fonts and font sizes.

This is the best ever - one click and they're either banned, or deleted (depending on the setting you wish) AND all their messages, posts, IM gone with them too, plus it auto bans their IP.
