How can other extensions (like .im) compete?

Since all search engines geo target their results, a .im name will never rank ahead of a .com, with all other things being the same...

Are these more longterm investments? While pay.im may not be worth much to anybody now, maybe 5 years down the road?

What are your thoughts on this?
