I think it is accurate for the phone model listed.

From one of my sites...just ONE of my pages doesn't load on it but someone here on NP accessed the same page OK on their cell phone.

So it's not a good indicator of how sites will actually look in other mobile devices?

The emulator is a good indicator of how a site will look on the phone model listed. Sadly, most phones will behave differently. It's like have 200 different browser brands and versions looking at your page. Almost impossible to standardize and make everyone happy.

Ughh... Even with the .mobi standards? I coded according to standards, even got a 5/5 on the mobi ready test.

I have had a test site work with one skin but not the other in the emulator. Is this your situation as well?

nba.mobi and msn.mobi looks very accurate to their actual sites, if that is any indication to its accuracy.

No, I was just wondering if my site would display in a mobile device the same way it displays in the emulator.

Very similar but nothing is perfect when emulated. Best of course is to see it on an actual phone but it will sure change from model to model.

You should test with serveral handsets and providers as there are 11+ different mobile browsers. We test 10 handsets and 3 providers.

Cingular is the most flexible with size, file types, and more, while Nextel is the bottom of the barrel.

That's just the thing, I don't have any mobile devices to test with that's why I'm relying on the emulator. I guess I'll just keep coding to standards and hope for the best.

You're not alone in this problem. Find out your friends who have internet capable phones, invite them over for some pizza provided they bring their phones for you to use for a few hours :)

Haha.

I'm seeing a strong need for the standards that .mobi is supposed to enforce. I just hope they do.

I agree that this is a concern. They will basically be peeing in their own well if they get loose about their standards.

Not everyone knows this but Opera will read WAP pages.
Only mainstream browser that will. Or you can get this extension for firefox

Also try:
www.operamini.com/demo
http://demo.opera-mini.net
Opera Mini will make any page look good though, it's amazing. If your phone supports it, you definitely should run it.

Nokia used to have an emulator out there based on their actual browser code. Not sure if it's still around.

Some phones seem to use openwave? Try their emulator:
