How about a change on the bumping?

It is nice that namepros is one of the few forums that allow bumping of threads.
And allow this to happen once every 24 hours.

Now this is the problem.
So many threads are just one post after another by the original poster just saying "bump" "still available" and so forth.

Thus, how about a change on the bumping schedule?
Instead of every 24 hours, make it 72 hours?
Or another time frame?

Just my thought while I sit here doing nothing.

All forum rules are being reviewed at this time and I thank you for this suggestion.

an added notion to this idea might be to automate the Bump system like a few other communities have and hard code the system to only allow a bump once per 48 or 72 hours. Comments / Questions would naturally be treated differently than a clear bump. But there could be a "Bump" Button that's required to be used when performing a bump.

I'm sure there will be plenty that will still try to make bumps look like updates to get away with bumping, but for the most part, the clear bumps would fall within that category and systematically moderate them self.

Just an extension to the idea anyways, I'm sure it may have to have some tweaking for it to actually work successfully.

I am banned there for that. :ghost:

It's like pollution when you repeatedly see the same thread day after day with nobody but the OP replying..... I like the OP's suggestion of the 72 hour rule... Makes better sense.

And it's nice to see we don't have to pay a fee to bump threads here on NP.. That I like ;)

No, no bumps are very important! :) Free of charge bumps of course.
Maybe make for example 1-2 FREE bumps and also to allow "update" (I mean "the price reduced", "the final price reduction", "the last call", "I need money asap - buy this domain", "would sell kidney" etc. etc.)

A bit kidding of course but "update" is not a bump so it need to exist and 1 or 2 free bumps would be very nice :)

Actually, what you've pointed out may be an update, but they also qualify as glorified bumps since they move the thread back to the top of page #1. Let's keep in mind that some people don't have the luxury in life to be able to stay logged in all day, every day and update (bump) there thread every couple hours. Not only that, but we have had more members than I can count in the past try to Update (bump) there thread every 30 minutes to an hour.

What this does is it puts all the Updaters (Bumpers) at the top of page 1 & all the members that have a full time job & other things to do in life fall to page 2 / 3 / 4 in a matter of minutes while the select few of 24/7 online members hold all the top spots forever.

Sure, it's not the 24/7 online members fault that others have to work and can't be online to compete with their consistent updates (bumps), but at the same time it's not fair that it's made that easy for them to manipulate the system and drown everyone else out simply because they do have more free time to be online 24/7.

I think a happy medium that's fair for everyone is essential. The more fair it can be kept, the better.

That's just my thoughts anyways.

1 per 24 hrs is easy on the op mind. 1 per 72 requires mental math for both ops and mods

price lowering "update" bumps will turn into someone posting a name for a high amount and lower bump it a dollar though out the day

Okay, let's do 1 free bump and 3 price reductions (1 per 24 hrs) - for the Fixed prices section
And 3(4) total bumps for - Offers wanted section

I think it would be more than enough for the sellers. IMO

If one must do mental math on something so simple as a bump every 72 hours, maybe they need some serious help?

Bumping like this is not good:
Just updated, new list of domains.
Just updated, new list of domains.
ETC ETC ETC

NO NO NO, You dont need GESTAPO RULES or Moderator Militia.

24h is fair enough, but needs to be automated.

I solved this by preventing multiple replies from the same user. like "Error. cant post more than 3 consecutive replies", so even if 24hrs pass the system wont accept a reply to bump by the thread starter. Its important to have this along with the 24hr roadblock.

I'm sure there is a plugin or mod for vbulletin. (if not, you may hire a freelancer to code it)

I like the way of "no bumps". Price reductions aren't bumps imo. And a 24h rule for the price reduction is a good idea also.
The jive will be lower, but so will visual polution.
Without any bumps, if you see a reply from the same person who starts the thread, you know that there's a price reduction to check.
Make it simple, extend the number of threads showing up on the first page, with no bumps. I think people will like it.

If "bumps" are not allowed, why would we list our domains for sale here? It doesn't make sense for the seller.

A simple example will demonstrate this.

A member places his domain for sale which sells 72 hours after the final bid. Someone bids initially, and 24 hours later he is not allowed to bump. No one can see his thread, it's on page two. The next day, it's on page three... 72 hours later, an "automatic" bump occurs but it's useless, auction ends in a few hours or already has ended.

As a seller, why would I be motivated to sell at NP when this kind of rules are implemented? I would be uderselling then, yet we would be bound to let go of the domain-despite the lack of exposure becuase of this "no bump" rule.

Many don't think about consequences of their ideas, but rather want to implement something taht might not be beneficial to the majority of seller using the Auction section. Something like this will lead to the declined use of the NP Auction section.

The rules currently are that ONE BUMP is allowed every 24 hours. Thta's been working quite fine. Some are getting annoyed, but then I am also sure that these members don't use NP Auctions much. Anyone bumping MORE THAN ONCE a day is clearly not obeying the rules and the mods know what to do when people break rules constantly.

If an automatic bump is allowed, I would aslo suggest something known as a "ModBot". It will automatically moderate posts and fake accounts. :D

I may in the minority here but I agree with 3D. The live auctions and the 1 bump every 24h rules are the reason I became a fan of NP. I would rather open 1 thread and bump it everyday than to open 100 threads and clutter up the marketplace.
