Alright, so my domain is on Register.com, and I have hosting at DreamHost.com. I don't want to transfer the domain over to DreamHost for several reasons, but I want to use the hosting @ DreamHost. Can I really do that? From what I understand, I can't. But I'd rather ask first before transferring the domain over to DreamHost.

Thanks.

Sure you can. Just change your DNS settings in your Register.com account to those assigned to you for your DreamHost account. Then create the account in your DH account. The DNS will take 12-36 hours to populate.

Thanks. I thought otherwise because I guess I misread the DreamHost wiki page on this subject, although I was 99% sure I'd done the exact thing before. (I'm new to this though, if you can't tell ;o)

We all had to start somewhere. Good luck!

Yes, you can have dns and hosting at two points. And in my opinion it is always the best option. Personally I won't register a domain with my host because if something goes wrong with my host, I will have to be at their mercy for getting my domain.

If your web hosting provider is domain name registar and separate account for domains and web hosting - nothing wrong with that.

You just changed DNS values like

ns1.yourhost.com
ns2.yourhost.com

etc...

And then add on your domain at cpanel at dreamhost.

Then off you go.

Yes as long as the webhost is ethical. Unfortuntly to many webhosts have kept the domain hostage because they know people wont have enough moeny to sue them.
