Mail server question

Okay..

I have this question which i can't seem to get an answer for.

My domain is hosted with a one company and i manage my email hosting from another on the same domain.

That is, ex: i have abcd.com hosted at dreamhost for example (by just changing the nameservers at the place where i registered the domain from), and have modified the MX entry(mail exchange) at dreamhost for this domain to another webhost.

Now if suppose dreamhost goes down, will i be able to access my emails ? as the server which hosts my emails is not down .

Anyone have any idea ?

No, it can still affect your email because your DNS records are still hosted with them. If you host your domain's DNS records at your registrar instead, that will be a better way since it is independent of your hosting account, so the MX records will still be working if something goes wrong

The best way to keep your MX records at the Registrar.in most cases, it would't fail.

Oh okay..

But now the problem is my domain is at Godaddy and i can only change the Zone records(MX record) if my domain is hosted with them, which it is obviously not.
So is there anyway i can do this ? Keep both emai and webhosting different ?

Keep the NS at Godaddy, setup a MX record to your mail host, and setup a A record to your web host. That is.

However wouldn't you still end up with the same problem should the mailserver then go down?

If the mailserver goes down you can't receive mails surely. This setting is to separate webhost and mail host. You can set up backup mail server if you really want.

The A name record is for pointing the IP address and i have a shared hosting account so i can only use ns1,ns2.

Any other option left for me ?

You can lookup the IP of your ns and set the A record, mate.

Did that, seems to be working now.... hope i am viewing the site and getting emails with the new settings and not from the old dns cache.

Anyway i can make out ? nwtools and other sites show the new settings in place but my isp might not have updated the dns cache.

Thanks guys, i think it should work now!
