Hello one and all!
I have been interested in Domain investing for a few years now but never really tried to understand how to do things properly. Over the last few years i have registered domains that i have thought of on the way home from work or whilst watching the TV and i have a portfolio of about 50 domains. I have tried a couple of times to sell a few of my domains, but to no avail.

I shall be reading as much as i can and asking a few questions no doubt. I hope i can learn enough to have a modicum of success in domaining and of course a little bit of profit :).

Best success to you...

If you can pay a few hundred dollars for an aged quality name or two, that is a good way to start...

investing in LLLL.com right now is relatively safe.

while getting started,
less is more!

Thanks wwwulff and Compassion. I mostly have hand registered domains, but i do have a couple of aged domains (well a couple of years old) and i am reading up on the mechanics of buying aged expired domains.

Hey there @Somertonian let me also welcome you to the forum, yes it is great to read up on the "mechanics of buying expired domains" but also never downplay the "gut instinct" factor...

Briguy, what you say is very true. I shall have to see if any of my 'gut instinct' purchases are worth anything on the appraisal thread and then hopefully on the selling thread...

Hey, Welcome to NamePros.
It's better to buy one good domain than buy 10 ok names. Follow the domain blogs and sales stats so you don't overpay on domains.

According to me, investing in LLLL.coms is the best option for you right now.

It doesn't require much due diligence either, and the prices will increase with time.

You can gamble on my domains too. :D

Welcome to the forum Somertonian. I think one thing that always helps me is thinking, who will buy this name? The more potential buyers you can think of for a name the better your chances are of selling it at the end of the day. Sure people buy brandable names all the time but if you are just starting out and looking for a safer option I would go with things you know well, pick a niche you understand, and pick names you think would benefit you as a business if you owned them. If you can think of several good potential businesses who could really benefit from the name then it is something you should consider buying to resell.
As an example, if I could register coffeeandtee.com that's a great brand for someone who wants to have a coffee shop and driving range in one! But personally I don't know much about golf, it's not my niche, I would check google and see if there were any businesses doing coffee and golf. How many (are there alot of people to potentially sell to)? Is this something I know about and know it's gonna be the next big thing? etc?

Let's say I could also register coffeeandtea.com. This has a lot of potential buyers, vending companies who supply those drinks, coffee houses, online coffee and tea sales, etc you get the idea. Obviously I am being overly simplistic and of course you probably couldn't hand reg either of them, but don't miss the big picture I am trying to present. Before you buy think about and google etc, who would benefit from the name, how many people would you be able to identify as potential buyers? How would you offer it to them if you got in front of them to make a pitch? How would you react if someone offered you the domain you bought? How easy is the domain name to remember, or to spell? These are all things to consider before buying a domain that you want to sell. There are many more of course which I am sure others on the forum have mentioned.

Good luck.
