The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Interesting that Robert Scoble and evangelist Theo Priestley is also realizing that tech editors are still not getting the message as you mentioned:

I was thinking along these lines when i registered Autonomous+VR over a year ago (controlling drones etc in Virtual Reality).

Yeah I think it's quite a big thing in the drone world.

They call it FPV (First Person View)

I am pretty sure FPV racing is done with headsets.

I see your VirtualRealityFPV and raise you one FPVgoggle (02/2012) ...LOL...

Been using them on/for drone (UAV) downlink video since 2008.
Once you de-skew standard 2D/3D video for a VR HMD, there is no better big screen view.
It's like being on the craft ! Now if I could just make a simulated cockpit !
(I'm work'n on it)

Edit: I might add that this is the only FPV name I hold. I find it of limited high value use overall.

This is a year old. Technical Illusions is a former Valve splinter and have been at it for many years.
Formar Disney Dev's are now involved with this CastAR project.
How it works (18 months old)
And I do wonder what they have been up to lately.

CastAR is one of the companies that confirmed by email about 6 months ago that they now consider themselves Mixed Reality opposed to AR.

Will be interesting to see which route they go because I don't really consider their tech to be Mixed Reality, but I suppose we will find out which direction they decide to go soon enough.

Yes they did launch a Mixed Reality Studio with former Disney Infinity Developers:

Mixed Reality Studio Launched With Former Disney Infinity Developers

CastAR Opens New Mixed-Reality Studio; Retail Release Forthcoming?

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/castar-mixed-reality-studio,news-53894.html

"Interestingly, CastAR used the same confounding nomenclature as Microsoft (with the HoloLens) to describe its product. Calling it “mixed reality” or “MR” can be a bit confusing to the average consumer, but the CastAR HMD falls into a grey area of sorts, featuring three different ways to display content. It works by projecting an image onto a reflective surface, but it also can display AR content and fully immersive VR content. (In that sense, CastAR's "MR" would seem more in line with Intel's "merged reality" MR nomenclature.)"

Apple going outside it's rank's for high level AR engineers ?
And I have mentioned that a dev kit was likely from apple for the last 6 months...
"Business Insider also reported that an AR software development kit could be in the making"

Acer to start rolling out it's ' Acer Windows Mixed Reality Development Edition ' ...That's a mouthful.
Anyone got a shorter name to sell them ? How do you spell BRAND CONFUSION.

AcerMR ?

MR is no longer than VR AR or 3D ;)

BTW I was only kidding, I would not suggest anyone reg's AcerMR to try and sell them because it won't end well lol

But I agree with @VRdommy about brand confusion, it's not necessarily a good thing but it is definitely happening.

Ever since I seen Google playing 'catch-up' trying to enter into Visual Recognition Systems,
(that part where we left off with volumetric imaging) many others had been doing the R&D in it for quite a while but it is likely to show itself in the next iPhone, and perhaps the next Samsung S8 or Note8.

Google went through a talent stealing period when it was intending to produce 'glass'. That slowed everyone else's development down a bit. But google already has this large catalog of stuff in the real world to work with. They have the advantage with content.

The handiest part of that tech is to just point the cam on your phone at anything you don't know what it is or perhaps what it is called to get that and plenty more info on it including language translation of a sign not written in your native language.
It's kinda the same tech they use in telling you the name of a song you sample through the microphone.
It's still volumetric data processing. Taking algorithmic samples and using fuzzy logic to find the best match(es).

Soon you will be able to point your phone at anyone or anything and know everything that anyone is willing to share about it and some things that were not intended for sharing. But even do that with old photo's where you don't remember the where or who. The more stuff that is cataloged, the more info at your fingertips or eyes I should say.

It's a lot of info to be sorted and seen. I don't suppose that it will be easy to do in a 2D interface so, VR/Augmented 180/360 interfaces will be needed to skim though lots of data quickly for user decision on what is more/most relevant.
I can clearly see Apple's path to that end. It all needs to be simple and straight forward for the user.
Initially, I can see location information for adds come to play. Just like folks do with google maps only much better.
It will be harder to achieve accuracy as the DB gets larger with things that are so close in comparison where fuzzy logic does not play so well. So resolutions of the samples will need to get better.
But I suspect there are going to be street names to describe what the tech does.
But in the case you have not seen this week old news of the rumor mill yet...

Now this is a promotion...

Samsung Galaxy S8 Free GearVR and $100 gift card.
http://www.androidauthority.com/leak-target-will-sell-galaxy-s8-free-gear-vr-100-gift-card-759010/

With a 3 month unconditional refund policy
http://en.koreaportal.com/articles/...n-unconditional-three-month-refund-policy.htm

I would note that from the leaked photos of the S8 that the aspect ratio has changed and would suggest the reason is a wider field of view in VR. Probably 110-120 degrees.

We will know exactly next week.

Sweet 16 comes to VR
http://www.tvtechnology.com/news/0002/intel-begins-ncaa-vr-partnership-with-sweet-16-games/280642

Not a basketball fan but most of my friends are. Interestingly I polled them to see if anyone was aware of the vr livecast and nobody knew of it and some have GearVR.
And so it seems they are still really in beta test mode on this since there is no real promotion of it.
But they will now have promo footage to promote a ticket for next year.

March Madness: NCAA harnesses Intel technology to broadcast games in VR

It will no doubt be far cheaper than actually getting into the game in Glendale – the Real VR experiences will set you back $2.99 per game or $7.99 to buy the bundle of all six games that Intel will broadcast in virtual reality.

The Gold package seats fans courtside with their favorite team, pumps in audio from inside the arena and offers the viewer choices of multiple camera angles plus dedicated game commentary for the VR experience to help guide viewers in VR. It also allows fans to select a produced point of view, where producers select the shots.

“We’re creating an entirely new way for fans to experience content, a different way to tell that story… by allowing fans to have a personalized experience,” Aufhauser said.

The Silver package runs $1.99/game and offers fans a single courtside camera view (180-degree live stream) with simulcast commentary from the CBS broadcast crew.

I'm going to guess that the only real reason someone strapped a tracker onto their cat was to keep from stepping on him/her while playing a room-scale game...
http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/23/15037810/triangular-pixels-cat-vive-vr-tracker
But I do look forward to more funny things to do with the 'track anything' devices they are making for vr input.
If I remember right, the Vive lighthouse is capable of tracking 128 items. But I'm not sure your computer will handle that just yet without some big slowdown. But a few more things are sure to be used soon.
But it will undoubtedly give the Vive a advantage as dev's start to write code with extra trackable items in the experience this year. HTC is the only manufacture that was seem set to provide built-in extra input I thought was important for future development.

I almost forgot this from last week... House scale VR...

While not for everybody, there is a large group of folks that find a space experience compelling content.

http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/news/hacking-maker/how-vr-is-being-used-simulate-space/

If you look at how much money is spent by consumers in this area, most under the radar, it sells.
I say under the radar because nobody is combining the multiple little segments together.
The largest may be tourism to space museums and current facilities.
Together with telescopes and computer aids to find, ID and view the stars, constellation and planets.
I have not played names for it it myself,
but looked around to find most of the names I think were top picks all taken. It's well played.
Probably a solid narrow segment for VR/AR/MR/360/3D names.
I'm sure this segments killer app is being made as we just think about it.

Here is a fist, replying to my own post.

Just to show how far I think ahead in implementation of tech...
You have to combine where the individual pieces are headed.
Since we were on Volumeteric data/ image rec systems...

Think of a set of AR glasses, with a camera for image recognition...
Able to point to where the planets/star/constellation are and name them (in your glasses) using voice commands in real time from what you are looking at.( hey siri, show me the north star )... arrows point direction to look and a circle around it when you are looking at it.
I'm sure something like this will be in Apple's initial line-up or shortly after a release as it is fascinating, cheap and easy to do with a already defined DB. Just a simple example.
But you need to think of the actual name of the program app/experience to find the most valuable names.
I'm still not playing this but those are my thoughts on it. That's how my crystal ball works.

Although I oddly get lightly claustrophobic watching movies with too much water or space, I did think people would be drawn to it in VR. A few I have....
