Google IO presentation on VR / AR very interesting... Nary a mention of "mixed reality," but rather traditional usage of terms "AR" and "VR" as part of "immersive computing"... (Also, no mention at all of what they're going to call their "standalone" headset... :?:)

It's really old news but resurfacing again with more info...

Lenovo and HTC
http://www.businessinsider.com/leno...ont-need-phones-or-computers-2017-5?r=UK&IR=T

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/vive-unveils-new-wireless-standalone-vr-headset/1100-6450129/

Googles is based on Qualcomm chips as I suspect many other will be as well.
It was their Snapdragon open hardware dev platform.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/..._support_for_standalone_Daydream_headsets.php
Which brings Intel to mind as I'm not sure if they will get theirs out by years end but I'm sure we will get to see what it's about with a release early next year.

And of course Oculus's Santa Cruz is to be a stand alone.

We will have plenty of choices at the end of the year.
But a bigger deal is have more of them under $500

Edit: I did forget to mention that many of them will resemble Acer's WMR goggle in function.
And don't count Apple out before years end. (most likely announce this year and delivered next)
Cheap.... probably not. But most of these CO's told us what they were up to last year.

IP History 15 changes on 9 unique IP addresses over 10 years
Registrar History 2 registrars with 2 drops

Augmented reality payments are going to be huge... Eventually, there's going to be an integrated "See and Buy" system... Your AR glasses (or "glARsses," as I call them...) will recognize an item, provide details regarding its features and use, and allow you to either purchase the item immediately in a retail environment OR allow fulfillment a la Amazon, etc. To this end, I'm still hanging on to:

Holo Pay
3D pay ;)

good stuff... I own couple things related:

HoloEcommerce.com
HoloRetail.com
HoloProduct.com
EcommerceVR.com

and few more good VR related payment terms...

cheers

Great to see more and more websites / articles shorten mixed reality to MR. And even better to see MR being used in the title of a big article.

SK Telecom has joined hands with Google to target the mixed reality (MR) market worth 10 trillion won (US$8.9 billion). MR, which merges augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

Tomorrow (friday) i go for a short break / vacation (8 days) to Mallorca.

Funny thing about my vacation last year in Tenerife... i was partying while wearing a VR shirt. (some will remember the pics lol)

But this time i will be more down to earth and blend in wearing some fancy clothing. But i am very confident about my portfolio and one year ago i would not believe how fast the Mixed Reality tech would be developt. It looks like VR needed far more time before a real device was launched. Within 6 months there will be a couple of early MR devices... i would not have believed this one year ago overthinking everything while on vacation.

A lot of progress in just one year time. I remember in februari / march 2016 we had (some MR thread users) had a discussion if domains with MR would have a use / future. Things are still very early but at least people are not laughing anymore about the idea of regging MR domains and their potential.

Google Lens Turns Your Camera Into a Search Box

GOOGLE IS REMAKING itself as an AI company, a virtual assistant company, a classroom-tools company, a VR company, and a gadget maker, but it’s still primarily a search company. And today at Google I/O, its annual gathering of developers, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a new product called Google Lens that amounts to an entirely new way of searching the internet: through your camera.

Lens is essentially image search in reverse: you take a picture, Google figures out what’s in it. This AI-powered computer vision has been around for some time, but Lens takes it much further. If you take a photo of a restaurant, Lens can do more than just say “it’s a restaurant,” which you know, or “it’s called Golden Corral,” which you also know. It can automatically find you the hours, or call up the menu, or see if there’s a table open tonight.

Lens is, in a way, a Google-y version of Snapchat’s and Instagram’s AR features: a way to understand more about the world just by looking at it. Of course, rather than place sharks next to your breakfast cereal, Google would rather show you nutrition facts. Or a blog post about the shocking truth behind the raisins. It’s most similar to what Pinterest announced earlier this year, a feature also named Lens. Pinterest hopes you’ll snap a photo of your outfit, or a package of broccoli, so that it can spit back shopping recommendations or killer new recipe ideas.
