Grrrrrrrrrrr!

I'm annoyed, mainly with myself.

I searched for a domain name using the provider that I normally buy from to check a name was available a few weeks ago.

It was, as it's a new idea for a project thats not been done before.

Go back today to buy it and it was reg'd last week!

My Question is:

As the new owner has only had it a week what do you think they would take for it if I contacted them and made them an offer?

I can't believe they've had the same idea as me and want to work on the project themselves.

Please don't tell me I should have bought it immediatley, I've already had that conversation with myself.

Thx in advance.

The way domaining is, when you contact them they want $xxx or better even if nobody in the world wants it but you, Just because you showed interest in it. Try to figure out more about them, see if they listed it on sedo, etc before contacting.

Don't feel bad. It happens to the best of us. Be it weeks, days or sometimes even hours after. It can be frustrating, but is merely part of the whole.

As suggested, you can likely find another name, which may prove to be better. However, if you are stuck on the name in question all you can do is make contact and simply inquire if the name is for sale, and if so, at what price? Keep your inquiry short and to the point. If they reply back you will know where you stand with your budget, as well as submitting a counter offer if you still want the name.

Looking forward to the outcome, should you keep the thread updated. All the best.

-Regards

Completely agree with RevDomains suggestion.
Would just like to add to his piece that when you contact the buyer don't make it sound desperate - don't say that you were eyeing that name, and you missed registering it, etc - just show scant, passing interest.
Hopefully, he'll want a quick sale and let it go for $XX price range.

Thank you for the replies, I'm very grateful.

Sadly the idea came 1st and the domain was just 100% based on it.

It's a bit like inventing the cellphone then finding that some bugger has registered cellphone.com

There are other names obviously but the generic term will always be a thorn in our side.

I have a meeting later today with the other people invloved in the project so we will discuss our options then.

I'll update what we decide to do.

Thanks again.

Its available with every other extension but if we don't get .com we are not interested in the rest.

We hope to be a market leader.

Update.

Our tech guru looked into the .com for us in more detail and found that it was in fact 1st registered until the end of April 2011 โ€“ when it was dropped and then picked up by someone else on 3rd of May.

We now have it on backorder with namejet for $** so weโ€™ll see if we get it for that.

Thanks again for all the replies I'll update when i get more news.

if you have employees running around having meetings about the name its surly worth low xxx to you. See if the new owner will take that.

contacting the new owner and making an offer is not going to make the situation any worse so you may as well give it a try. my other suggestion is to use the new .co extension (if not taken) which is a long term successor of the saturated .com market. the aim of this extension is to give new entrepreneurs their place on the net with a memorable and easy extension to remember

I'm sorry to hear this. This is really frustrating indeed. I am currently feeling hopeless also just like you. I wanted this domain name with the .COM but it is already taken. Choosing a domain name is just as hard as choosing your niche also. Gives me headache every time.

Provider, as in a registrar? I doubt they had the same idea. I feel the name was suggested to someone else and they took it. I would not do searches at a registrar, but rather maybe a whois lookup. Even better type it in a search bar and see. Usually I can tell because it will take me to my ISP's search page if its available.

A few things for you. If it expired at the end of april this year and was picked up within three days this sounds like the original registrant renewed it, or it was somehow picked up at a closeout auction. The drop cycle should take longer than described to delete. see http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/gtld-lifecycle.htm

If you have backordered it at namejet (this will take a year or so to come to fruition) if it does drop again.

If you are wanting this domain now? Find out who you could be dealing with. Ie find out if they own other domains and how much they are. A simple search for the address on the whois database will possibly give you a clue. See if they have listed it for sale on sedo/afternic/buydomains/godaddy etc there may be a buy it now price so you can get a heads up where to start from.

I cant understand whether it has been dropped and registered again or caught in a closeout auction (ie such as godaddys) how ever if it is a fresh reg, the is a miniscule chance they may drop it/grace delete it after finding no traffi. Check whois about now to confirm this small chance.

LOL I'm not Alan Sugar. (Or Donald Trump) We don't have any employees! There are though 3 of us working on the project.

Thanks all again for the replies.

Siga, I have checked on Sedo already but will now have a look at afternic/buydomains/godaddy as you suggested.

Just give the new owner a call, might be an interesting partner for your venture if he/she thought of the same thing.

Wait until next year and see if the name is renewed or dropped.
