Their domain name was mispelled. So I did a lookup on the correct spelling. It was available! Emailed the company with the incorrect spelling. Talked to their IT guy and offered to give them the domain name.

The owner was very appreciative and offered me a lifetime subscription to their service. This is easily worth over $1000.

Guess a nice gesture has its own reward. :)

I have to agree with you Lazyegg. a few years ago I tried to buy my own name and the guy wanted 5k. Well a year ago, it expired and I picked it up for $19.99 since I had it on Godaddy's expire catch.. totally forgot about it til it went into my account. :)

I see karma happening so often that I am a believer.

There's soo many names out there and so many ways to profit, there's no need to steal from others.

Agreed!

In my noob days, I registered CafeNooner.com from the expireds. A restaurant was using the .net. After a year the domain expired last month, so I sent an email to the .net WHOIS asking if they wanted to domain for free. They promptly responded with interest. Since it was expired, I ended up having to pay a renewal fee to push. The owner offered to PayPal the renewal fee, and a free meal at his restaurant.

A bit ago I use to participate in auctions and would often bid against a guy with an Asian name. I noticed he kept buying misspelled English words - I felt bad for him, as I assumed he was a non-English speaker and perhaps was going by phonetic sounds only. But it was weird - he kept doing it, this went on for a couple of years.

Then I met Ron Jackson and read up on the guy. His name was Yun Yee, and he sold 1/2 of his portfolio (many of slightly misspelled 1 English word) domains for $163 million.

I purchased a lot of 20 domains from someone on a forum a few months ago. One of the names included in the lot was Namebio.net. I contacted one of the owners of namebio.com through namepros and offered them the domain. I didn't ask anything for the name but they offered me a free 1 month listing space in their featured listings news ticker. Was quite happy with that.

Similar story. There is a non profit that I know and they let their name expire, with all pr, connections etc leaving worth it. I caught it, renewed for 7 more years, contacted the manager and have the name transfered to them. They offered full reimbursement though I was fine with just donating it.

They are still clueless about domains, that is why I renewed for long as they would have lost it again in a year.

The moral of the story is:
  • What goes around, comes around. It is called Karma!
  • If someone gives you a favor, show your sense of gratitude. Don't be a free-loader or scumbag!
  • Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds!
  • Feel Good, Be Good, Do Good!
PEACE ON EARTH!

There's an annual event that I tend to go to with a friend, and they were using the domain eventnamelondon.net.

They announced they were moving to another city in the UK, but didn't register the domain(s) with the new city for weeks.

As I'm a big fan of the event, I snapped up the .net, .com and .co.uk for the new city so that no-one else would register them, then contacted their IT department and offered them over for free.
They were really grateful and I think it taught them a lesson to think things like this through a bit more.
And on the plus side, they were so grateful that they gave me and a friend VIP passes for the whole weekend the event was on :)
