I backordered an expiring domain yesterday at godaddy. Today I get the following email...

We have noted that the following changes occurred between 01/15/2011 and 01/16/2011:
The domain expiration date has been changed:
OLD: 15-jan-2011
NEW: 15-jan-2012

The problem is that the domain has NOT been renewed yet. So why would they send me this email? Is my backorder still good?

GoDaddy (or the current registrar) might have extended the domain to 2012 -- so you get the notification because something changed and it is being "monitored" by their backorder program.

My guess is that the Whois wasn't updated when you checked. Try checking again.

I backordered a domain and I was the only bidder and they sent it to public auction. Never used them since.

I backordered a domain yesterday that was due for dropping today and at first the 'WhoIs' showed that it had been registered by one of their partner companies, a quick phone call informed me that they were trying to catch it. Low and behold it is now showing in my account. :bingo:

Hope the same result occurs for you, but the best bet if things seem odd is to give them a quick call.

Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks guys. Not sure what's going on but I'll keep a close eye on it. The domain is registered with godaddy but it shows as being under godaddy domain disputes. It was showing that long before it expired as well.

Just typed in the web address. It says it's expired and pending renewal or deletion.

check godaddy auctions for the domain. check every few days until it drops.

How can they auction it? Maybe the current owner will renew.

GoDaddy always "renews" the domains I let drop (which is why you got notified about the change of expiration date to 2012).

In about 25 days after the original expiration date, they put it to their auctions, and the auction will last for about 10 days. The original owner can renew it during this period, and even for a few days after you win it at auction.

The domain won't actually DROP for about 70 - 80 days from original expiration date (assuming owner does not renew, and it makes it through the expiring auctions, and then the closeout auctions).

Regards,
DN

Thanks. This explanation makes the most sense to me.

Update: I no longer trust godaddy at all.

I followed this particular domain for almost 2 months. Whois showed the registrant in Belize but the listed email was godaddy@domaindisputes. The domain expired for 2 days and then showed as renewed. Now whois shows it registered to a company in the United Kingdom. This is a premium LLL .com I'm talking about and whatever happened is very shady IMO.

Perhaps it's time to post all the details.

Perhaps some other registrar got it and not Godaddy...? Does it show snapnames or another registrar? FYI Godaddy is not the best to backorder domains with. If it was a LLL you should have backordered at several places including snapnames.

What details do you want? Domain = sie.com. The Whois for at least 2 months previous to renewal were not even close to the current info.

I backordered several places but it was renewed with godaddy. The rep I talked to put me on hold twice because he obviously had no clue.

It was probably "stolen" - a frequent issue with LLL.coms.

Research the whois history for the domain using DomainTools. Also, google it and check out Archive.org.

Yes you may be right. Whois shows current owner, then changed to Belize owner, now back to current owner.

Theft never crossed my mind!

Hi Keith. I won't repeat what DN_Hunter said. Which is correct. But I would add that GoDaddy (the Registry, actually) automatically renews domains when they expire. This is what you are seeing. They then auction off the domain. If nobody buys the domain, then they reverse the renewal 45 days after expiry, and the domain proceeds to drop about 78 days after expiry. Afaik, if there is a backorder on the domain, it gets awarded to the backorderer before it goes to the closeout auction. However, since you already have a backorder on the domain, your backorder will appear as the first bid on the domain. So watch the auction for the domain, from about 25 days after expiry. It seems to me, you are still good to go. But I'd worry that whatever dispute there is on this domain won't go away when you become the registrant.

Thanks stub. The domain was surely stolen now that I look back at ownership history.

I'll be giving loads of rep points tomorrow for all who posted their thoughts on this one :)

Feel like a rookie for not checking history straight away, lol.

Keith,
If LLL.com is dropping with godaddy as registrar, there is no need to backorder it - it will finish at TDNAM (godaddy auctions) eventually. It will never finish its pending-delete phase, so there is no need to backorder it with snap/namejet etc. (but it cant hurt).

Second, if you see godaddy domain dispute in whois, great chance is something is wrong. I once bought domain which was stolen before and it was under godaddy dispute before godaddy returned it to its rightful owner.

Thanks, good info. Godaddy backorders appear to be a waste if they're attached in any way.

I am not sure what you want to say? I am using godaddy backorder for years now and never had any problem. Only once domain I backordered was sent to public auction, with me as only bidder.
