GoDaddy Registering .WS Again After 1-Day Outage ...

Just learned that you can no longer register .ws at GoDaddy. No word on why they dropped the extension and I am still trying to find out what happens to .ws domains in their system when they expire.

Could be a major blow to .ws because a lot of people registered them due to the cheap price at GoDaddy (less than a third of what the .ws home site charges - plus if you register at the .ws site and end up selling a domain, they charge you an extortionate $100 transfer fee and cancel any time you have already paid for on the domain and require thenew owner to buy a new $70 two-year registration! Net effect - $170 in extra fees to transfer a domain at website.ws). Moral of the story - NEVER register a .ws at website.ws.

With GoDaddy and WildWest out of the picture what registrar has the next best .ws price?

That's a blow for Godaddy as well as the .ws ext IMHO. If you find out what could have caused this please let me know - I'm just curious mainly, but I do have one .ws name with them through 2007.

As far as the next best price, iDotz.net has them for $19.95, I'm not too sure outside of that and I know a lot of people don't particularly favor iDotz.net.

.WS no longer appears on the list of available extensions when I go to GoDaddy.com. I wrote support and got this reply:

GoDaddy is not currently registering .ws domains. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any further questions regarding your GoDaddy account, please provide us with an account number so that we may more accurately address your concerns.

As you can see in this screen shot: http://www.dnjournal.com/screenshot.jpg I took from the GoDaddy home page, .ws is no longer listed among the available extensions - same for when you click on the drop down box for the available list. Can't capture that because the pop up disappears when you click the capture button.

Duke - I started off at DynaDot.com @ 7.99$ per reg (They were the first with the lowest prices As far as I know) .... But I have a few at a WWD reseller myself :o

I remember bitching about all the wild west accounts ..I stopped buying aftermarket .Ws on any reseller accounts because .WS is non transferable..even back to godaddy.

Hmmmm - If SlowDaddy and WWD really drop .WS .... and We can't transfer them (As far as I know Still) - As Duke already asked , What happens to our domains ? :o

No this is GoDaddy's main site. .WS also does not appear at the WildWest reseller site I use (Domainut.com). Odd that you would still see a page showing .ws (wonder if that is a cached page?).

Magically returned here too - and I got another response from GoDaddy contradicting what they told me before:

I apologize for the confusion. We do currently register .WS domain names. Since we currently do register .WS domains the current domains in your account and about to be transferred to your account will not have any problems. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

I do have one more question - what the hell is going on over there! - but I'll save that for another day

To test it out I did register a .ws and it worked, so it looks like the coast is clear again.

Love the complete lack of an explanation there. I suppose it's better than "Mike pressed the wrong button" but it makes you wonder what caused the missing .ws ext. Although it was only one name, I can rest a little easier now.

You cant do a whois on .WS anywhere that gives complete information...

.Ws "Protects" all their registrants information


and as much as we hate the Idea we cant transfer our .WS from one registrara to another ...that policy also makes .Ws the most secure domain extension ..no one can steal what cant be transfered
