It almost time for me to renew some names at Godaddy.com (March 3, 2009)
I do appreciate an early heads up on my expiring domains, but I noticed this at the end of the email, and now I see why they send these out early, if you don't have auto-renew on and the domain you want keep just expired...

part of email from GODADDY ...
-------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT: For any cancelled .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .US, .BIZ, .CC, or .TV domain name, the Registry will hold the name in a Redemption Period for 30 days. During this time, the domain name will be removed from the zone files (the list of domains currently in the global DNS); therefore, any Web site or email services associated with the domain name will stop working. The original domain registrant may retrieve the domain name from deletion during this period for a fee of $80.
-------------------------------------------

Did you know this about Godaddy? I didn't until today...

Pretty sure I've seen that charge before as well as other registrars doing something similar. It's basically a redemption fee.

Not much strange, they will..... after all business matters.

And users are not left with any other option though.

I think it refers to cancelled domains (in contradiction to expired domains)

at GoDaddy , after a domain expires you have 18 days to renew it at the regular price (or use coupons/discount-club) ...

after that you will have to pay a $80 redemption fee to retrieve the domain ...

10 days later it goes to GoDaddy Auctions (TDNAM) for a 10-day auction ...

if it does not receive bids it goes to a 5-day Closeout auction (Firesale) ...

if it does not get bought there , it goes to Registry Redemption Period (again $80 Redemption Fee) for 30 days ... and after that it is the 5-day Pending Delete Period

I think GoDaddy refers to cancelled domains as the ones after the 42nd day when they are entering the Registry Redemption Period

There is a 12 day grace period at GoDaddy which maybe goes as far as 18 days in reality, where you can renew your domain at cost. After that there are these additional charges. I don't know if it's just me but after it's taken from my account and before it reached TDNAM, I can renew for renewal + $10. after that it's the full fee.
