Ok guys, i want to inquire before bashing someone...

I got an email from GD today:

"The domains listed below expired on 11/13/2006.

This is your final notice to renew your domain name(s)! You must renew by 11/25/2006 or the domains listed below will be cancelled."

then down below it says:

"IMPORTANT: Should you allow your domain to be cancelled, the Registry will hold the name in a Redemption Period for 30 days. During this time, the domain name will be removed from the zone files (the list of domains currently in the global DNS); therefore, any Web site or email services associated with the domain name will stop working. The original domain registrant may retrieve the domain name from deletion during this period for a fee of $80."

If i'm not mistaken expired domains should go through 40 days grace period where all services are shut off, but the domain owner may still renew the domain for a standard renewal fee.

Then if the original owner fails to renew, it'll go through "redemption period"....

Why my name is taking the express lane to the redemption period??????? where is that 40 days??
is this some kind of Rip-the-Fella Strategy??

Letting your names go past expiration date is playing with fire, since the domain legally no longer belongs to you. Check the terms and conditions at your favorite registrar.

It's up to the registrar's own policies how many days after the expiration date to allow before sending it to the RGP delete process. It could be as soon as the day after, if they so desired. Looks like GoDaddy modified theirs to 2 weeks to accommodate their TDNAM marketplace, where expiring names get listed for resale if not renewed.

It is reffering to after the 12 day grace period you are given. Domain expires on the 1st of Jan - then you have 12 days before the zone files are pulled and the domain removed from your account, at this point you have 30 days for redemption.

Hope this is helpful!

12+30= 42

You're absolutely right RJ !!!
because as far as i could remember.... it used to be 40days grace period then around 2 weeks redemption... pls don't quote me for this because its been a while since i let my names expire. I just got stuck with transfering process.

Everything seems to be very lucidly clear to my eyes now. They gave free private registration then, just to snare up newbies. Now if you wanted to transfer out your names, you need to go through tedious un-registering Domains-by-proxy process, otherwise your "Authorization Code" will never reach your inbox.

Then came the deal with Microsoft.

You're right DS. But the issue i'm trying to point out here is the amount of money involves with the days given.

They reduced the grace period but increased the redemption period. You still pay normal renewal fee during the Grace period but it takes $80 to recover a name from a redemption period.

Cleaver isn't IT ?

It has been $80 (for last couple years) for the redemption period, and that charge always has applied after the 12 day grace period. I worked there, that is the honest to goodness truth.

Perhaps this will help make things even clearer:

http://icann.org/registrars/eddp.htm

3.7.5.3 In the absence of extenuating circumstances (as defined in Section 3.7.5.1 above), a domain name must be deleted within 45 days of either the registrar or the registrant terminating a registration agreement.

In essence, a registrar can retain an expired domain name up to 45 days max.
They can even choose to delete the domain name after it expires and not
offer any grace period whatsoever.

I remember posting here somewhere they lowered their grace period from 30
to what it is now. But at least they're still offering such and let you renew at
their current price.

thank you guys.

I'm very clear now.

According to ICANN i must be grateful enough to be given 12days grace period.
Cheers domainplate, i appreciate your input.
