GoDaddy Auctions -- Discussion, Acquisitions, and Sales

I searched the forum and could not find a thread dedicated solely to Godaddy auctions, which seem to be heating up lately.

I envision this thread as a place for discussion regarding YOUR sales and acquisitions, and general discussion about the auction venue itself, and, perhaps, some domain oddities that are popping up on the auction site, for example, high-priced domains that should be regfee.

:)

One caveat, though: for your own good, PLEASE do not reveal your auction win (or anyone else's, for that matter) until the domain has landed in your account because the original owner still has the option to renew it, and I know how vexing that can be. In other words, don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

On the other hand, if you're having second thoughts about your auction win, by all means tell us all about it.

I suppose that if an auction win is high profile, it's already out there, but, still...

Anyway, I'll start with three comments:

1. I won my first (and maybe last) intentional typo, and it's getting clicks (no $ so far, though): Forwx.com. I could not find a live TM on this term, but one never knows. I have mixed feelings about this one.

2. I accidentally clicked on a BIN that I didn't want (I wanted the one above it), but I decided to honor the bid anyway. Grrr..., so be careful before hitting the submit button. It's not in my account yet, so I can't really reveal it right now.

3. Currently, there's a weird .co domain at over $9,000, with three bidders duking it out. Again, I don't want to reveal what it is, but if you go to the most active auctions, it's number 1 (as of this posting).

Mods, I hope this thread is okay.

:)

godaddy auctions are now adding 10 minutes to an auction if a bid is placed in the last 10 minutes? this totally sucks and is going to be a huge waste of time....i hope its just a mistake or something.

That is F@#$ing HORRIBLE!

That is how flippa is and can make an auction go on for hours longer with just little stinking bids.!

So I just saw this in action. An auction with 8 minutes left extended to 18 minutes.

If this is the new standard going forward I will be taking the majority of my domain investment capital elsewhere.

I am not going to sit around waiting for hours for an auction to end, and I also don't trust proxy bidding vs anonymous bidders.

Just confirmed with Paul that those changes are in effect. They also did away with being able to click through to a link in your watch list to see the info after an auction closes. http://www.hybriddomainer.com/2013/04/a-few-changes-to-go-daddy-auctions.html

You basically have (2) options now -

1.) Stick around wasting time as an auction keeps extending.
2.) Enter a higher proxy bid and trust anonymous bidding.

Neither of those options are that appealing to me personally. There are plenty of other investment opportunities out there.

I never trust proxy bidding.
I just stay with my $5 increments.

I thought a $10 first bid was that of someone who had placed a backorder on the domain?

Someone was able to place a $10 bid on a domain just now in the last 10 minutes and it extended it another 10 minutes so I went to place a $15 bid on it and it bumped up their bid to $20 :-/:-/:-/

How did they get to make a proxy bid if a $10 first did is supposed to be a backorder?

What other rules are now changed?

I'm assuming godaddy made this move to try and bring in more money but I see this going 2 ways.

1. Make current member angry and leave = lost money
2. People just wait for domains to go to closeout instead of placing a last minute bid and turning it into a bidding war = lost money

That's definitely not new. I've seen people put $10 bids last minute do many times and I still don't know how people are making $10 bids.

Yip... They are extending the auction 10 minutes if bid close to the end.

Just experienced this now.

I was shocked! :ghost:

What 's this world coming to??

This isn't new. You can place a backorder and then immediately add a bid. Only the backorder shows up until someone bids against you.

The 10 minute thing sucks though. We should all email daily complaints.

Yes, 10 minutes is too long.
many people will get problems because the time zone different.
example at my time mostly the auctions ended after 12PM, so many bidder will feel sleepy

I had a few issue with my proxy bids at GD

The selling price went all the way up to my maximum amount. When I called them, they told me that there are others bids but I didn't see any bids prior to my highest bid. If i'm not mistaken they told me it was a system glitch.D-:

Trying to squeeze out money as much as possible from bidders. Seams like the expired domains business is not as good as few years ago, which is understandable.
Basically nothing wrong with that, we all want to make money, but this also ruins the auction fun, like at ebay. Lot of people like the bidding game for instance at ebay where they fight for something within the last seconds. If ebay would extend the auction again and again, i am pretty sure they would lose 50% of the bidders, those bidders would either leave ebay completely or switch to cheap buy it now items.

Plus, don't trust proxy bidding.
No matter if its uncle Joe's one-person snap service or godaddy. Even if godaddy as a whole wouldn't risk "suspicious" activity, one "halvarez" with a loophole at godaddy would be enough to spoil the fun.
Fuck this, i will only buy at closeouts now and wait and see what happens.

UPDATE:

It appears that the time extended has been reduced to 5 Minutes!

They made the change pretty quick, must have had a lot of complaints either that or the 10 minute extension just didn't work out as far as increased sales.

I still much prefer the 2 minute extension but 5 minutes is way better then 10.

Yeah noticed that Lennco I am surprised because talking to Paul, 10 minutes was considered short, they were thinking about making it longer than 10 minutes.

OMG! longer then 10 minutes? The Horror! The Horror!

To me it seemed like you get bigger bidding wars with 2 minute extensions :imho:

wow, i don't get why they don't understand their core customers are domain people. longer times only serve the one off guys who are slow and have to figure out how it works. the guys who buy the most know the system and want to get done asap but with 10 minutes between bids, people will have to do other work while waiting, will forget and will result in less bidding, in my opinion. 5 minutes isn't too bad, i still prefer 2 but 10 totally sucked especially when you place a bid a second too late and its extended for 20 minutes!

Lennco they got intrigued by the extended auction times with the .info and .org auctions. They extended by one hour. The thinking is that it will make it better for the bidders to have more time to bid, if someone has a job they have more than two minutes to get a notification email and place another bid.
