The first blockbuster deal of the decade. GoDaddy Inc. (NYSE: GDDY), the company that empowers everyday entrepreneurs, today announced it is acquiring Uniregistry's leading domain registrar and marketplace businesses. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close sometime in Q2 2020. The Uniregistry domain registry is not part of the … [Read more...]

@equity78 AssJockey.com. Now that's money in the bank. ;) Everyone says Frank owned awesome domains and I'm sure that's true. I think it would be interesting to see the list before it gets lost forever at NameFind (where it's basically impossible to do any meaningful search/filtering anyway).

I'm just wondering if anybody has more specific information about the best domains in the bunch. Crazy good dictionary words, notable LLL, LLLL etc.

Most of the domainers who started after the year 2000 built their portfolio through drops (specially after the .com bust of 2001-2002). No one can have 350000 super quality domains ( it's just not possible) , but I assume that there are a lot of viable domains that are suitable for small businesses that Frank were able to hand pick from the drops or register himself as back then there were still a lot of good domains to hand register if someone knew what they were doing.

I believe what has made this portfolio attractive to Godaddy is the shear number of domains that are suitable for small businesses and individuals who want to get online which is the category that Godaddy is advertising and specialises in. (the majority of them are probably two word .coms)

IMO

It’s packed with very nice 4L.coms, I know that much, and a lot of strong 2 keyword .coms, and single word .net’s. Who knows what they have liquidated in the following few months leading up to this.

Well like everyone there is always junk too, Mike Berkens and I were talking about that today. No one has 100,000 great names or even really good names. Frank owns a lot of two worders. I just raised by request to 1000 on Domain IQ which gets me A and part of B. A lot of air related names, picture related.

@wwwweb @equity78 Interesting. Thanks for the additional info. Yeah, I'm sure a lot of them are just average or good (as you demonstrated @equity78) and the gems are sprinkled in between.

Even if Godaddy sells 50000 of them to end users at an average price of $500 that's still 25 million dollars, and they can still make some money from the rest that they put on the auction.

I estimate that they probably paid around 10 million dollars for the portfolio part of the deal.

$10M for 350,000 names, I would pay $12M right now, quick flip?

If you have watched Taryn on Namejet last few years, up until last few weeks when they started going quiet you would know the amount of 4-5 figure names they bought based on their targeted data they had from their tens of thousands of sold names database.

M.B. Sold 70,000 names which included a lot of good chip short type names for $35M, yes there is a lot of garbage as shown above, there are a lot of gems, that they have used the power of No for many years on. There will be a lot of .ca’s as well, as Frank was Canadian, not sure if Godaddy wanted those.

Yeah, definitely quantity over quality. Many are quite speculative. Though there are some good exact match ones sprinkled there. BabyWash.com immediately stood out, for example.

Think you will find that number much larger, I had people tell me today they saw $70 million and asked me if those people were under a doctor's care?

Marchex got $140 name
Mike Berkens $500 a name

Frank had 350,000 names (Nothing to do with Uniregistry) at $200 a name that's $70 million. At half of what Mike got that's $87.5 million.

It's a 350000 domain portfolio, but in reality you are talking about only 50000 names (approximately) that could compete on the market for getting end user interest.

And I am saying 10 million for just the portfolio and not the rest of the stuff that was included in the deal.

IMO

And this is a small sampling too, 1,000 names out of 350,000.

Frank would not have sold for $10million he is already a wealthy man. Estimates range from $70million to up to $300 million.

Yes, many investors would team up to cherry pick his portfolio for $10M, it was churning good cash flow per month, so maybe Frank didn’t like where verisign is going with price hikes, and thought it was time to get out.

puh lease, price hike pales in comparison to Frank’s past “hikes”

GoDaddy reports Q2 earnings around August second or third.

@equity78 Yeah. Thanks again for copy/pasting all of these. I'm personally more interested in the 4L and the other high end ones from the portfolio, but it's an interesting sample size. Most will never sell and likely don't have much liquid value on their own, but the sheer volume generates plenty of sales. It's a good system for deep pockets (Mike Mann etc.).
