marketplace Getting Sales confirmations from Afternic, Who I'm not listed with

Forgive me if this has already been discussed. I make a few regular sales each year, usually in the $5,000 range. I previously had all my domains listed at Dan for the 10% commission, When Godady took over. I immediately closed my Dan account and moved all my domains to the Sedo sales platform, this is an exclusive Sedo arrangement to take advantage of the 10% commission and been working well,

All well and good, but this is the second time I have received a sales confirmation from Afternic. In both instances the sales price is exactly as listed on Sedo but would incur their/afternic 25% commission structure. If I were to sell via Afternic I'd want to up my price by the extra 15%. I let the first one go through (no problems) but I'm loathe to let it happen again.

Are Afternic just using other platforms listings to try and finalise sales. neither Godaddy or Afternic show any of my other domains listed, or indeed these last two buy notifications. These aren't offers but confirmed sales notifications.

Hi

how did they charge you 25% if your name wasn't listed on their site?
and/or
maybe they had some carry-over rights to sell names listed on Dan, for a given period in the future.

at any rate, the sales are a plus,
Congrats!
but how they are happening needs to be known or at least...under your control.
best solution might be to relist them on afternic and set prices higher there, than on sedo.

imo...

they just deducted it from the purchase price, I did think it strange that they required my paypal (or other payment) details at the time of purchase. You wouldn't be asking an existing customer for what would be normal filed info. Relisting on other sites is against the T and C's for Sedo's exclusive 10% commission. I'm not worried just interested if others had experienced similar

It is possible that they might have already migrated all your listings BEFORE you deleted your listings or closed your account. What happened in your case was fortunate but these type of things can go south very quickly so I very recently requested them to delete my account just in case. They might still have your other domains listed. Sales are great but 25% is just plain crazy man.

HI

i have names listed on both sites.
if using sedo ns and domain is BIN priced, then it's only 10% commission.

imo...

I'm betting that GD auto-transferred your Dan domains over to Afternic and they're floating around over there with your Dan prices. This happened to a friend of mine recently who supposed "closed" his Dan account then started getting Offer and BIN messages.

Use the email from the proposed Afternic sale to check if there is an active account on Afternic and then see if there are any domains under that account

Hi

now i'm really curious,
wondering if they purchased your name as the buyer (ie: namefind), created an invoice and then charged you 25% fee, as if you were an existing user of their platform.

perhaps see where the domain resolves today, to know if it was endused or has been relisted for sale.

imo....

Thanks for all the answers, The domain is still listed at Sedo (with lander) with it's bin price as I've yet to decide if to follow through with Afternic. I just hate paying $1250 in commission, takes the whole pleasure of a decent sale away. I'm probably going to ignore it.

Can't see me ever wanting to use Godaddy or Afternic again, If they ban me, that should resolve all my issues with them, I've replied to their Sale-email, stating I don't have any domains listed for sale with them. If the potential buyer wants to secure the purchase at the same price, he/she knows where to go.

My days of paying exorbitant commission rates is over

I've always put in quite a bit of work when it comes to pricing my domains, Sure my average hold period is around 6 to 8 years, sometimes even 10 to 15 years. I'm the first to recognise if a particular domain is on the UP or downward slope and adjust for that, usually every two years.

It gets my goat, to to effectively offered only $3,750 on a ยฃ5,000 fixed price listing. 10% I accept, 15% I can probably tolerate but that's the limit.

My reason for raising this issue, is someone leveraging this effective discount on what are reasonably priced domains. I'm not normally a suspicious person (basic caution aside) but if it looks/smells like rat then it probably is one

You can also list on Afternic and set status to "hidden" - then they won't be offered for sale there or on their network, and no one will be able to dishonestly list your names in their own Afternic account, something which does happen and has been mentioned on here.

Just create an account, add your names and then delete them.

A further rather interesting development has arisen or should I say come to my attention since my last post. After Afternic has sent me a further follow-up email requesting I unlock this domain.

So I thought, lets just see what's going on at Afterenic from my end. I have no username or password but I do have the live email address that Afternic used to contact me. Not one that I use for domain listings or sales, this is so I have separate email boxes for personal messages.

Now it gets interesting.
Using this email address, I accessed the username and the password reset to access this so called account. And this is what I found.

Empty data fields in every instance. NO Address details, NO contact phone number, NO payment details, ALL fields are blank except for the email address. Further more only two domains (of the ten of my domains listed ) had a price listed. In both cases it was approximately HALF of the price these domains are listed at Sedo, and way below any price I would consider listing at and even then , Never would I list at Afternic.

Unsurprisingly these are two of my better names, with the other eight still unpriced.

I have replied to Afternic stating this glaring anomaly. I immediately removed the two domains that had these discounted prices.

The user name was in the name of 'CLIVE' plus one other word. So watch-out guys. Afternic seems to accept domain listings without any proof of ownership apart from a accepting email address and not even requiring acceptance of such listings. Obviously, like anyone, I can not see any benefit to the spurious domain lister except to discount genuine listings at other sites, maybe, even to only enter payment details after a sale, Who knows

Even if that is a Dan auto-migration screwup it is problematic.

But if the - now removed - Afternic price was half the Sedo advertised price, a scammer could use that difference to sell on at the advertised Sedo price or a slight discount from there, assuming they had a buyer. Or someone or something at Afternic took the initiative to create cherry-picked listings from Dan data to discount and hope to strongarm you into selling, not sure to whose benefit.

I once had a domain I had not listed at Dan get listed and sold by a scammer there, then Dan approached me to ask if I would take the price, which was way too low, so I said no and created a listing of my own for the domain at Dan.

I did the same on Afternic and eventually got the lead.

The first thing I do when getting an offer is to hit the major domain marketplaces to see if this domain is a) listed and b) still in my account if I have one there, and if not, I reauthorize it.

Everyone should do the same.

I feel sorry for a genuine buyer, If that's the case But then again how on earth did they find their way to Afternic. sounds fishy to me

The domain does indeed reflect the identity of a strong (and now in established use ccld) totally un trademarkable as it's Far too descriptive. I've kept the price on Sedo the same at $4600 though I'm very tempted to double.

Funny enough I did have a little banter here on Namepros with our Bob Hawkes after I accidently let the ccld drop, saying someone will soon come back for the .Com. saying It's far too good to ignore if they/someone runs with the Country code.

NO Bob has nothing to do with current developments. A sale of some sorts was always on the cards, just a case of when with no-bend from me

Never say never (with GoDaddy). This is exactly what they required from me just two weeks ago. They have two teams (brokers, transaction assurance support) working in tandem, apparently.

Hi @BaileyUK,
We're glad to provide you with some additional clarity. For future issues or questions, the quickest way to get assistance is through Afternic's live chat support at afternic.com/contact.

Your domain names listed on Dan were migrated to Afternic after the advertised opt-out period in October 2024. Any seller who didn't opt out through Dan's Migration Center had their listings, along with any BIN prices, moved to Afternic.

The team also reviewed your Dan records, which indicate your account was active, and your last recorded contact with the support team was several years ago.

Feel free to DM us if you have any further questions.

Thanks for chipping in there Godaddy staff member. Don't you think it strange that No other data fields were migrated over. (all fields empty) I certainly wouldn't want to be held liable for a 25% commission rate with any domain reseller. My request to close my Dan account was sent at the time of the Dan, godaddy announcement. Hence never attempted to log on Dan again OR godaddy or Afternic,. Every domain is now with Sedo and that's the way it shall stay.

Would I really list only about ten of my domains, and only two with questionable prices. I don't think so. Maybe your data records can show how long all these Supporting and *REQUIRED fields have been blank. That should give us an indicator as to when my DAN account was, I assume, only partially closed.

Could/would I have gone through each of my listings at Dan and attempted to delete every individual field entry -, not a chance. From memory I don't think even Dan would allow blank fields across the board.
Yes, I can accept all supporting data may only have to be entered once, so where did it all go ? If as you say this was a 'Migration' Reads more like a half baked migration of a deleted account to me
