FYI -- Some of GoDaddy E-Mail Servers Have Crashed -- Big Problems

I thought my GoDaddy email address had been hacked, so I called tech for support.

(After I had already changed my GD password and account email...)

It turns out that some of their servers have crashed BIG TIME, and the tech guy has no idea when these servers will be back on line.

Not all the servers have crashed, so you may be okay.

But before you panic (as I did), check with tech.

Better to be safe than sorry.

wonder why more than one server crashed at the same time

Good question...

DDOS attack?

Evidently a lot of people were calling in because I had to wait a while for tech.

You could use Skype phone to call the U.S. number, or if you have family going to the U.S., they can pick up a Magicjack for you, which acts like a U.S. phone number, no matter where you are in the world. I used mine when I was living in Europe, and it worked like a charm.

More Technical Problems, PLEASE Read if You Forward Domains at Go Daddy

*

I suspect that last week's (7/18) crash has caused some other problems, and I just want to make you aware of them because GD will NOT help you because they don't want to admit that the problem went deeper than they are telling us.

A little background: when you forward your domains to another site, you'll see a little box that says, "Checking this box will update servers and DNS to support this change" (or something to this effect). The default is a check mark in the box, so I always left it. Always, the forwarding took place place almost immediately--most of the time, anyway, maybe a few hours later.

Well, I began noticing that my domains were NOT forwarding properly, and these were ones (seven domains) I was working with around the time of the crash.

You may want to check the domains you forwarded on July 18-20 to make sure they are resolving to your target page.

So, evidently, during and after the crash, the nameserver and DNS settings were NOT being changed to support any forwarding changes (though no one will admit it). These were mostly auction domains, but one was a actually a hand reg, which puzzles me....

If your domains are not resolving properly, support won't help you (even though it was their issue), but here's how you can make the change manually (This involves changing an IP number):

Log in to your Account Manager.

Next to Domains, click Launch.

From the DNS tab, select DNS Manager. The DNS Dashboard displays.

In the Domain list, for the domain name you want to update, click Edit Zone. The Zone File Editor displays.

In the A Host section, click the @ record.

For Points to, type 50.63.202.1 [Evidently, this is one, among many, of GD's forwarding IP's.]

Click Save Zone File, and then click OK.

And you're very welcome.

:)

If your forwarding is working, you do NOT need to need to do anything. This crash did not affect everyone.

Is the only way to check this to run every forwarded domain though your address bar to see whether it forwards or not. Or are there tell-tale signs in the control panel that a domain is not forwarding correctly?

I just happened to do a forwarding check on some domains and saw that several were not resolving after a few days, so I got in touch with support, who gave me these directions for changing the IP.

Nothing in the panel offered any hints that anything was wrong. I was told that I would have to check every forward and make any changes manually FOR EVERY DOMAIN.

This is complete BS because once the domain is disabled for the previous owner and transferred to another owner, the nameservers, IP, and DNS are supposed to revert to defaults. I even had a reg fee domain that had the wrong IP.

I don't know what is going on over at GD tech, but it's not pretty. The "new and improved" control panel is a mess, often necessitating a double click (instead of just one).

Instead of spending money on marketing new gTLDs, they need to work on streamlining the technical aspects.

I just found another domain that wasn't working properly, and it had some hinky stuff in the A host record.

An extra IP with Telegu (subdomain?) and an IP.

Grrrr....

ADDED: It looks as though forwarding IPs begin with the 50.63.202.__ string, but there may be other forwarding IP numbers. I just don't know. I guess we'll all have to test EVERY forwarding request manually.

IMPORTANT Update About IPs for Forwarding Domains

*

Another FYI:

I have been told that any domain that you acquire from auction will have to be checked for a forwarding IP number, that THIS WILL NOT automatically be changed when you forward a domain--this is despite the checked box that says it will automatically make changes (It lies).

(Actually, I have had hinky, non-forwardable IPs for reg fee domains as well, so you might as well start checking everything).

So what is a "forwarding IP?" I have figured out that the forwarding IPs begin with 50.63.202 -- at least that's what I think (that seems to work).

It looks as though I will have to check all my forwarded domains--a major pain in the a$$.

Also, if your account is inactive for more than 5 minutes, you will be automatically logged out--no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It is Godaddy security policy, and it applies to every account.

Also, I have been having trouble with my preferred registration profile--it works, except when it doesn't, which is mostly. Also, in the account profile, there is no country code button for the telephone number, so you have to manually add it once the domain migrates to your account--where there IS a drop-down menu for telephone country codes. Got that? None for the account profile, yes for the contact settings in your domain panel. Logical? I think not.

Otherwise, you will have an invalid phone number and will be afoul of ICANN's contact rule. I asked why there is no drop-down menu for that, and my rep had no answer. I suggested that he ask tech about adding this menu, and he just said that tech isn't likely to make such a change.

WTH??????

If anyone from Godaddy wants to jump in, feel free to explain why all this a$$hattery is occurring at Godaddy.

I'm all ears.

Some of my premium listings changed prices, one sold, so I called and cancelled the sale and deleted the others.
