Before the ,INFO domain actions (25 free Domainnames for ONE year)

At DEC 2004 there are:
--- Active: 2,989,360 .INFO names

Count after the first 3-4 weeks issuing free .INFO names

At JAN 2005 there are:
--- Active: 3,367,592 .INFO names

Count one year after the free .INFO action

At 02 JANUARI 2006 there are:
--- Active: 2,386,937 .INFO names

Conclusion:
There are 602.423 domain less names the one year ago! So IMO the free names did not make the .INFO name more popular than that is was, even worst it downgraded it?

There is one basic Flaw in your Figures
A lot of the Freebies were regged Before December 2004 (DomainSite and Other registrars had finished the promotion by October 2004)
therefore the December 2004 figures would have already been inflated by a large chunk of freebies.
Then a lot of the Sept-December 2004 freebies have since dropped so that is why the very low figure for Current total registrations.

Remember, Sipense (eNom) registered around 1 million free .INFOs "on behalf" of customers in September 2004. Do you have .INFO stats before the free .INFO promotion started?

I sold one of my free .infos for $800, so I now like .info ;)

The give aways started in September 2004 at which point there were
1,233,000 .info's even after the latest round of drops there are around 2,390,000 .info's.

The registations have been pretty strong since the start of the free promotion
http://www.chart.info/stats16.htm

A million more registrants and good week on week increases...
So all in all it looks like a good marketting ploy for Afilias afterall.

Those stats don't look right!

I think the extension is a flop. I wouldn't invest in it.

What do you base your Hypothesis on?

I agree that it did little to promote .info, but don't agree that it detracted from .info values. It was in retrospect very inconsequential, a distraction with no lasting effect one way or the other. No one aside from domainers even know about it.

Agree on the incorrect numbers. I already registered nearly all of my free .infos way before Dec. 2004 as did practically everyone else. To give you an idea of the success have a look at what the buyer of about 90 or so of mine has created www.cityseek.info . All of which were renewed and developed and this is only a start of the success examples just from me.

Nor would you reap the rewards that I have, from it.

From the same place you got your info before and after the beginning of the promotion
29 AUG 2004 - 1,233,620 = 3248 (17,518 IDN's)
5 SEP 2004 - 1,282,342 = 48,722 (17,600 IDN's)
12 SEP 2004 - 1,422,816 = 140,474 (18,021 IDN's)

A month later pretty much all of the good pickins were gone.
03 OCT 2004 - 2,562,864 = 1,025,356 (!) (19,039 IDN's)

Oct. Nov. and December I spent what freebies I could on catching drops which worked out well because thats prime .info drop time.

I think many n00bs bought info and then didn't had to pay an dlet them expire, that's all! In my opinion .info is a very good extension and it gonna live...;)

.info will always be there but, it will never become as big as .com & .net

I disagree with the title :p

I did sell most of my freebies - but out of the ones I intended to "keep" - I renewed or re-registered at least 75% of them ;)

From just Parking/PPC alone last year - I made enough off my "Freebies" to Renew "All" of my porfolio (Including "Not free" domains owned prior to this). I hardly call "Pure Profit" a failure - and I'd imagine afilias does not consider it one either ;)

I like .info , of course it is not so strong as .com is .
It would be even stronger if it were used more appropriately,
afterall we live in the information age. IMHO

I disagree with the title
I understand ;) but it seems that they did not make a difference overall?
