Few questions from a newbie....(appraisals, etc)

I just started getting interested in domaining a few weeks ago and had a few questions.

Basically I only have a few domains that I have spent less than $100 on just by checking estibot and seeing what was registered. Is this a good strategy for a newbie to take?

Are appraisals even a close reflection of what a domain will actually sell for?

And what is the easiest way to get yourself into the market? Is it by registering originals? Or by picking up on deleted names? Or actually playing the market and buying names at auction or for sale and reselling them at later dates?

Thanks for all the help.

Hi
Welcome :) We all have to start somewhere. Estibot is a decent tool. Many of the values are too high but I always use it if I like a domain just for another perspective. Sometimes you can get decent deals here on Namepros. Tdnam is another site to check out. Occasionally I have gotten some decent hand regs too. I guess the answer is it takes a lot of time, patience and educating yourself about domaining. Best wishes

Estibot in general is very good, but it is problematic for two types of domains. One type is where the search term metrics seriously undervalue the domain, because the words may not be popular search terms together but actually are valuable to an end-user. The other type is where Estibot overvalues the domain because the search term metrics are good but in English the domain doesn't make sense or doesn't really have good end-user potential. Can't think of examples of these off the top of my head but if you do a lot of estibot checks you will see what I mean.

The other things you should check is google adwords to see how often people search for the terms, see related keywords to get you thinking of other ideas, and how much advertiser competition for the keywords there is, and how much the advertisers are paying per click. Also check to see whether a domain used to be a developed site, this adds to the value because it can mean type-in traffic and backlinks and good search-engine rankings.

And, read a lot here and see what other people are selling and buying, and also read dnjournal for the weekly sales reports.

What's the easiest way to get into the markedt? I think that depends on what your goals are. Theres a great article "different types of domainers", that might help you out here. http://www.mwzd.com/
