Questions seem to abound, even among experienced NamePros, regarding the backordering systems and processes used by the various services. The information on this site on that topic is spread wide and far, and in many cases is ambiguous at best. Conflicting information is also everywhere to be found.

Let's set some of this straight if we can.

It will be a big help to everyone, in that I am sure there are some things you THINK you know, yet perhaps you're "innocently incorrect" (PC way of saying "wrong").

I'd suggest this be discussed, in detail, right here. Perhaps Our Kind Administrator Gods can edit this as valid information comes in.

Here are some "built-in" questions that need addressing:
1. What are the pros/cons of GoDaddy backordering?
Some would include prepayment, the hassle of stopping a general backorder and turning it into a credit for reuse, the question of it going to auction after backordering it, the chances of getting it picked up versus the chances of getting it through another service

2. Pros/cons of the other services?
One thing I have noticed is the snapnames list of domains seems incomplete. Perhaps the information in their lists is a subset of, or altogether different from, the lists of GoDaddy or Pool?

3. What is considered the most accurate list of expired or expiring names?
(What the heck is the concrete difference between the two, anyway?)

4. What tools/lists/services are available that provide data on expiring domain names, such as PR, Alexa, LP, etc.? How can you be assured that these lists aren't already cherrypicked?

5. How much weight should one even give to Pagerank and so forth for an expiring name? Does it stay with the name or not, or is it "sandboxed" or fractionally-valued, etc.?

6. What percentage chance does one reasonably expect to be able to get when trying to backorder a domain name? Sure, premium domains will be harder than other, less-desirable names, but what is a reasonable expectation on ANY level?

7. How does one know if a domain is truly possible to get through this process? That is to say, some show dates well into the future when it would have appeared that it has expired.

8. Can registrars jump on an expiring name before their clients?

As you can see, there are a lot of potential topics for a good FAQ on this. I believe, by looking at the number of articles read as compared to the number of posts, a lof of people are not finding the information they are seeking.

Let's get the facts all here as best we can.
