question Expired while on sale — is it a bad name or too high of a price point?

I’m eyeing an expired / closeout domain that is currently on sale for $25k! I see this and think, 1) shit — this name will never sell; don’t buy it. Or, 2) that’s a ridiculous price tag. Surely it’ll sell at half or quarter of that price… or will it? Perhaps the price wasn’t the issue.

I’ve encountered something like this many times now. How many of you wouldn’t buy an expiring domain if you learned it was already on sale by its current owner? Might you think the high price point was the issue?

Lots of names are listed for sale at prices with ridiculous expectations and then allowed to drop because no-one else shares that viewpoint.

The question is - if you had not seen the sale price and then made your own judgement, would you still go after the name at expired / closeout?

Can you actually do something with it to justify getting it or alternatively sell it for some sort of realistic profit?

Thanks, @alcy & David. If anything, seeing it already on sale is a deterrent for me. Otherwise, it’s a great name, imo.

I don't care if it's already listed for sale or not. If it's a good buy (undervalued) and I like it, then it's mine. :sneaky:

Hey @alcy. When using Estibot to estimate value of a domain, it tells you if the domain is currently listed for sale on Afternic. If I buy it and put it on sale, will I just get stuck holding the bag?

In this instance, the domain is listed for $25k. I want to believe it might have a better chance since I’d be listing at a fraction of that price. Hopefully that makes sense.

There was a guy once who told people to always "shoot the moon". Some listened. The problem is, not every rocket can reach the moon, and some tried that with a plastic gun.

I always try to shoot at the stars but I know that it will end up hitting the dome, that is why I stopped shooting higher than the orbit.

If I know the name is great then as long as it's in my budget I don't care what it was used for before or whether it was on sale or not.

If I'm on the fence about a name and see that it was on sale for a reasonable price for some time (via archive.org) then I'll usually pass.

If I feel it was priced too high then it's 50/50 and probably comes down to how many names I've bought that day as to whether it makes the cut.
