Scale It Down
Want your website to reach more people? Make it ready to move.

More than 1 billion people worldwide will be accessing the internet from a mobile device at least once a month by 2010, according to IDC Internet Commerce Market Model, version 11.1. A great way to make your website accessible via BlackBerry or cell phone is to build a .mobi version.

"This top-level domain name is the first to distinguish a website based on the protocol it uses vs. the type of company it is," says Charles Steinfield, chairperson of the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media at Michigan State University.

To get a .mobi name, start with your hosting provider or domain name company. You simply sign up for a .mobi name the way you'd sign up for a .com one. You can also advertise the new name on your materials to let customers know your site works on mobile devices.

Next, you'll have to format your site upfront so that it will render properly on as many mobile devices as possible. The best way to do this is to work with a designer who has been certified to follow the .mobi standards created by MTLD Top Level Domain Ltd. in Dublin, Ireland, the organization behind the .mobi domain name. To find these designers, check out the MTLD website.

Here in the U.S., Network Solutions recently launched a web tool that lets site owners comply with the MTLD standards (prices range from $21.99 to $34.99 per year). It also plans to offer a "do it for me" design service this year to help companies build .mobi sites. Prices will start at less than $300.

The goal of any .mobi site is to offer simple navigation that only requires the use of the up or down key. All information must also be easily read on a small screen and clearly displayed without left or right scrolling. These sites are designed to solve the biggest barriers to mobile internet use--poorly formatted pages, excessive content, slow access and long load times--which lead to costly mobile bills and difficult logins and navigation. As surfing from your BlackBerry gets easier, expect more people to jump on the mobile internet bandwagon.

Well, it's obvious that Melissa and the idiotic folks at Entrepreneur don't know that the most most logical thing to do is go to a sites m.whatever.com and hope for a mobile version instead of a stupid idea like a dedicated tld that assures a mobile version will be there... :hehe:

2008 will be the start of the masses hearing about .mobi.

Great news for .mobi......not so great news for m.whatever.com, mobile.whatever.com, whatever.whatever.com

I don't know, there may be some possibilities yet for some that are looking to match up their,

m.whatever.com with pc.whatever.com
or
mobile.whatever.com with desktop.whatever.com

The article covered a lot of ground in a few simple sentences.

The benefits of a mobi domain are well presented.

Easy to read without scrolling, faster and cheaper download times, confidence the website will meet any cellphone or service providers technical issues, etc.

Interesting comments from someone seriously involved in technology education at the university level. That is where the future business leaders are coming from.

One of the better articles on mobi because of it's simplicity of explanation.

Mobi bashers are quickly running out of debatable issues.

The writing is on the wall...mobi is progressing in lock step with the mobile internet.

Someday, mobile internet usage could very well replace desktop use.

Thanks for the link to the article.

Regards,

Sags

You're spot on when you say "some day mobile internet usage could very well replace desktop use". I have a feeling it will be sooner than later. Some around here get bashed for even thinking along those lines.

It really boils down to the latest technology being thrust into the hands of a world that is ready to accept it. Mobile growth is staggering right now and is showing no signs of a slow down. To me it is very easy to see a swift change away from the pc and toward the mobile. Mobile has too much going its way and the convenience factor reigns supreme. It's what everyone wants and soon they will have it thanks to .mobi :)

Mobi could and most likely will be on par or surpass .com at some point in the future (5-10 years or sooner). Lets not forget how fast things can change in the world we live in today!
