ENOM and their .EU pre-registration queue

You can now pre-register with Enom for .eu landrush. So you select a name and you can see where in the queue you are. You must pay $9.95 fee for getting in the queue. Problem is you cannot see if someone else has already regged that name with Enom and is ahead in the queue with that name. So if this is the case you are already guaranteed that you loose your $9.95 if someone already has it regged with Enom. There should be a feature so you can see if someone has already regged that name with Enom because then obviously you will choose a name that nobody has regged with Enom yet. And also if successful you must still pay $39.95 registration fee on top of this.

I am now registering with a Europe based accredited eurid registrar and I can see excactly where my name is in the queue and if there are others with that name or not. Also I dont pay anything at all. I only pay IF my registration is successful and then it is only a one off amount of 9.50 euro for 1 year registration

As long as they are stating everything up front, I would not call it being a ripoff artist. This doesn't seem to be much different than backordering a domain from a service that makes you pay $20 no matter if you get the name or not. most companies will allow the fee to be credited forward to another backorder that is successful. Does enom say anything if the $10 fee is credited forward to another pre-registration is the reg isn't successful?

I asked for my $9.95 to be refunded because I was unhappy with my purchase to join a queue. Enom failed to reply to my email.

No they dont say anything about carrying your money over because they dont carry your money over. You loose your money. What happens is that you cannot see whether someone else has already regged the name you want with them. So for instance you want to reg say HAPPY.EU.with Enom. But you cannot see if anybody has already registered HAPPY.EU with Enom. So perhaps somebody registered HAPPY.EU 2 months ago with Enom and now everybody else who registeres HAPPY.EU with Enom pays $9.95 which they are guaranteed to loose. Only Enom themselves know that HAPPY.EU is already regged with them but they dont tell you --no they just keep your money. They should TELL you and so give you the possibility to reg another name that is still available with them. MUCH more fair is,nt it???Quite simple to understand is,nt it.
So anyway I have found a registrar that allows me to see immediately when I pre-reg a .eu name if I am the first one with that name or not. And I dont pay anything at all. I only pay when they successfully reg my name with eurid on 7 April 2006. And then it only costs me 9.50 euro for a whole year and no hidden other costs.
THAT IS FAIR.

Seems like a pretty profitable business plan. Charge people for the symbolic action of being in a queue but potentially never getting to the front of it (and never knowing what spot you are in).

That,s not what were talking about. That only shows you if a name has been applied for in the sunrise 2 period which is for businesses and people applying for family names. We are talking about ENOM and the Landrush period and not being able to see if a particular name has been pre-registered already with ENOM.

What is a rip-off is the whole process of Pre-registration.

But eNom and all the others offering Pre-registration do tell people it is only a listing of interest in the domain .Anyone expecting to being able ,(when available) of securing the name is deluding themselves.

Even if you are at the front of the queue ,a better qualified applicant will be granted registration, even if they pre-registered at the end of list.

The position in the queue is only a function of time of pre-registration ,not of the chance of getting the name.

If you want to guarantee getting the .EU name of your choice , there is only one way , pre-register some outlandish name that no-one will also pre-register or have a Rock-solid claim to the name through Trademark or similiar legal right.

Exactly but the point is they are hurting people by charging money to be placed in a queue with hardly a real chance of getting the name and you loose your money. That is the RIP-OFF!!!! THey take your bucks even if you dont get the name. BAHHH SUCKS big TIME

Nobody "Forced" you to pay the money ,so you should have realised ,but yes it is a very dodgy practice.
A better method would be to allow the listing of interest in the name and only charge If you actually can register the name when and if available.

In a way, I agree. Of course no one's forcing anyone to use it, but not having
even the slightest hint of having a chance (or even a good one) at the name
you want doesn't really give me any confidence using that service.

So unless you've got b** of steel and money to burn, look elsewhere.

I asked enom for a refund of the ยฃ9.95 fee I paid to join the queue. After three days they sent this reply. Here is the correspondence:

--- Your Reply - 3/3/2006 4:46 PM ---

Please refund my $9.95 charge for joining a pre-registration queue. I have paid to join the queue and I am not receiving the services I have paid for. If I have paid $9.95 you have not right to delete me from the queue within 72 hours because I do not sign a form giving enom the right to cahrge infinite amounts to my credit card at ienom's discretion. If you do not refund this $9.95 within 24 hours I will make a formal complaint to my credit card company that I have not received the service I have paid for. I will also mention you wanted me to sign a form saying you can make charges to my credit card whenever you like, I am sure you are aware if my credit card company uphold my complaint enom may have its ability to take credit cards suspended.

Hello Gary ,
Hello Gary ,
What you have paid for and recieved is the domain xxxxx.eu be added to the Go Live queue on your behalf. This is not an order that I can refund. If you choose to not return the fax that is of course at your discretion. It is a requisite placed on us and you by the EURID registry for completing domain aquisition on your behalf. So you have received the service you paid for.

Not surprised that's the response they gave you. Both the provider and the
consumer can have different viewpoints, but it's the provider who decides if
they've "provided the service" or not.

If you're going to dispute the credit card charge, be sure to move out all your
domain names from enom first.

Put this issue aside for the moment.

Stop and think before saying (much less using a title) somebody is a "RIP OFF ARTIST" on a public message board. It implies serious things. It is misleading, and potentially damaging.

OK I have removed the term since it is deemed offensive. I cannot remove the main banner heading though.

There are many so-called pre-reg services that will take $100 from you just for a vague chance to be queued, eNom is one of the cheapest ways to participate. Plus and minuses all way round.
