A Libertarian for President? George Phillies wants to end the Internet Poker Ban! :D

=======================================================

Recently, Congress took a radical step toward protecting our nation. Under the guise of protecting our country from terrorists trying to attack our harbors, it passed a ban on internet poker players. Of course, it may be the case that someplace, somewhere, someone actually believes that internet poker players are third-world terrorists out to destroy our way of life. Unfortunately, one of these people is a United States Senator.
Real Americans know: Internet poker players are not terrorists. They are regular Americans, just like you and me. They have a hobby. They play cards. To meet more opponents, they play over the internet: On the internet, they can meet thousands of new opponents, from the safety of their own living rooms.

Real Americans know: Poker is as American as apple pie. It's a game that has been played by tens of millions of your fellow citizens since before living memory. Poker is no more a terrorist threat than the Statue of Liberty is a terrorist threat.

Americans recognize: The Poker ban had nothing to do with stopping terrorism. The Poker ban was passed because too many Congressmen are ready to go down on their knees before their political allies. Unfortunately, those political allies are well meaning Americans who think they should use the Federal government to impose their moral ideas on you.

My position on the Internet Poker Ban is simple: Even for Congress, the internet poker ban was an unusually dumb idea. Congress should stick with things it understands, like renaming French Fries. They've done that twice now. The internet poker ban should be repealed immediately. Don't quibble about the details. Repeal the whole law the ban was attached to. Start over with a clean piece of paper.

The trouble is is that playing poker online is not illegal in the US. Gambling is and has always been illegal on the internet for Americans, but the Government couldn't stop it. So they decided to stop the credit card companies and payment processors from processing transactions related to gambling.

So unless you make gambling legal in all states, it isn't going to happen!!

He's just trying to get your vote :laugh:

You just said that gambling is illegal online, but poker is not... Poker is a form of gambling. But yeh, technically online gambling is not illegal. There was a law passed awhile ago which tried to address the legalities of it, but it ended up being completely ambiguous and did nothing but cause even more debate on the issue. But yes, like you mentioned, they couldn't really do anything about it, so they decided to go after the payment processors..

I just got an email from Party Poker inviting me to join their campaign to repeal the law... I used to be a major fan of Party Poker, but after they turned tail and abandoned the entire community of US poker players in order to appease their investors, they can kiss my you know what... I guess the investors are NOW seeing how much money they are losing by eliminating US players, so their finally deciding to do something about it.

I believe the ban in the online poker/gambling in the US was an ammendment to the wire act that was introduced in the early 1900's due to the bookies and Mob related crimes. At the time the internet was not invented. And congress felt that since the internet uses phone lines. And that the wire act covered telephone lines that the internet usage should be covered within the laws of this act.

I do believe it only covers those online poker/gambling sites that reside within the US. Not outside. I know many operate elsewhere outside the US.

Yes, I believe that is the act as well, but there is so much debate on it and it hasn't been ruled one way or the other that it's effectively useless. And my Internet doesn't use telephone lines, it uses cable lines :)
