Edwards also claimed that consumers won't necessarily have to key in the actual characters - .mobi - when visiting a site. That's because browsers from Access, Nokia and Openwave will automatically default to assuming that the user wants the .mobi domain, not the .com site.

When does this happen?

Well now, that would be absolutely huge news......the best news I could ever ask for.

If this happens, I guess we can pretty much guarantee dotmobi success... Cheers :)

The whole .mobi environment is due to take off in a few weeks' time (May 22nd2006) with a 'Limited Industry Sunrise'. That's the founders plus a few buddies. That will be followed by 'Trademark Sunrise' from June 12th.

Yeah - over a year old.

I actually sent Vance Hedderel from .MOBI an email 2 weeks ago asking him to please clarify whether there would be a default on mobile phones for .Mobi and I pointed out to him (by quoting his excact words) that he (and Neil Edwards) had said that eventually .Mobi would be the default. He replied to me saying that that decision is in the hands of the mobile phone manufacturers and the service providers and that such decisions will take time to implement. He also pointed out to me that my view on the whole matter as a domainer was motivated by different reasons then those of the end-users, service providers and handset manufacturers.
Guess he's got a point there. :)

That decision won't take time as much as it will take content. I've said it repeatedly, if I were them I wouldn't default to a sea of parking pages.

IF the RFP's were moving ahead and getting into the hands of the relevant End user folks who were then getting up cool, useful, unique and compeling websites ... the potential then for the default would be a more logical next step, IMHO. :gl:

With the first four (FOUR) RFP's still not yet in the hands of these critical End users, we are a long, long time away from any potential for any .MOBI default (and this doesn't even take into account the willingness / participation / "strategic investment" from the aforementioned mobile phone manufacturers and the service providers)! :guilty:

IF, agin IF, the .MOBI makes it, I'm sticking with my initial 12 - 15 year viable .MOBI "ecosystem" projection, IMHO.
Just my two sense.

No worries. :)

What's your time-frame prediction, Gemulder ... and why? :gl:
Thanks.

Jeff,

12-15 years is a joke. Forget cellphones, In 12-15 years, we'll be running around with sunglasses that have computer screens in them, and we'll all be half borg.

Again, no worries. ;)

Remember, I'm talking about the .MOBI IF and when ... not the larger "Mobile Web" revolution, IMHO.
What's your time-frame prediction, Garrett ... and why? :gl:
Thanks much.

AS I've said many times, 3-5 years. The reason I say that is because that's the timeframe for the technology to advance and the marketing to kick in to where the average Joe not only has easy access to the mobile web, but it is affordable to him.

If .mobi is king of this revolution, then I say that within 5 years it will be cruisin'.

My major reason for saying 5 years vs 10-15 is that technology is moving a lot faster today than it was in the .com days.

This is just an estimate, your results may vary :hehe:

Thanks, Garrett ... man, we have a pretty wide prediction range for being one in the same person?!? :guilty: :bah:

Thanks again for your input and opinion, most helpful. :tu:

in 12-15 years .com will be a memory.

Everybody will use their own ccTld or .mobi. Why do we need .com ?
